"Chatel Construction is by far one of the best Long Island has to offer. Not only are they professional and knowledgeable, they are also flexible and provide full service support before, during and after construction! They are the premiere General Contractor the Junior League of Long Island will rely on for the entire repair and upgrade process of their historic landmark building that houses their thrift shop and headquarters. We had the honor of having them come onboard and support us through 8 months of growing and changing scope and they became the ideal partner through this process. Paul and Scott are remarkable and hire on the best workers to make your project as unique and high quality as they possibly can! We cannot wait to continue working alongside of them!"

Small jobs welcome

"Jason was wonderful to work with. We contacted many contractors to discuss our renovations. Jason was by far the most responsive, thorough, professional and easiest to work with. He was available and patient with all of our endless questions. We had many issues along the way including configuring kitchen layout, broken medicine cabinets, floor refinishing, delayed appliances, etc. It was all extremely stressful, but working with Jason made the process more manageable. I joke that he was also a marriage counselor for us since my husband and I didn't agree on everything, shockingly. :) I highly recommend working with Jason!"

"Excellent contractors! We keep hiring them. They are extremely efficient. And they do it all. They worked on our bk condo by adding a staircase and building a second floor from scratch., as well as a total kitchen remodel. They also did a complete cosmetic update renovation to my mom’s house in queens. You know you have great contractors when you go back to them to get more work done."

"I wish I could give C & M even more stars! My experience with Matt, Jose, Matteo and Juan (as well as everyone else working for them) could not have been better. C & M renovated an office space for me and they did an amazing job. They added new walls and doors (were even able to make them soundproof), new floors, a new bathroom, a new kitchenette, re-wired for a split system, painted, wallpapered, and more. Yes, this was a big project for me, renovating, furnishing, dealing with a co-op board, dealing with city and state offices, lots of stress to say the least. But then there was Matt and the C & M team--ahhhh, stress-free: really! Imagine a contractor that anticipates the next thing to be done; think of a small thing that you would like, and before you ask for it, it is done. Imagine a contractor who is honest, kind, thoughtful, really smart, professional, works clean, and is meticulous in the execution of everything. He was done before I thought he would be! No, it is not a dream: it is C & M. I cannot say enough good things about C & M. Consider yourself lucky to be able to hire them."

"Started work very quickly. Foreman was great. Tile work was fabulous. Everything looked great in the end. Stuck to the contract pricing. Had to add some additional expenses because I wanted additional work. Did not like the electrician Alfred who took a long time to do his work. Had to visit often to ensure everything was as I wanted. When it wasn't they were quick to change it. The end result was stunning. Nearly everyone who saw the work asked who the contractor was."

"Bex is hands down the most capable and reliable contractor I've ever worked with. I have thrown all sorts of challenges at him in our new apartment, from removing a pocket door and converting it into a regular door, to fixing the wall and plumbing behind our washer/dryer and much more. He has met every challenge. He's also very courteous and careful. I can't recommend him enough!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can hang picture frames, shelves, and other items on Trusscore panels. For lightweight items (less than 30 pounds), the company recommends using adhesive strips rather than nails or screws. However, you’ll need to secure heavier objects to a stud in the wall. In these situations, Trusscore recommends cutting away the panel material and fastening the object to the stud with metal hardware.

Framing is the shell of the house. It includes several steps, including studs, plumbing, and electricity. A professional will ensure the wall frame is secured for the house’s structural integrity.

Framing prices change depending on the material and whether the wall is load-bearing. Most contractors use wood to frame a home, but metal is another popular choice.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.
