"What started as a roofing job spiraled quickly into a huge job. Parapet replacement. New skylights. New gutters. The works. Chatel Construction handled every single aspect of the job. Scaffolding , sub-contractor, compliance, permits, etc. In NYC permitting is one of the most difficult obstacles to navigate. Scott was in constant contact with all of my neighbors. He kept them informed and assuaged any concerns they had. He even paid for one tenant’s dry cleaning because their coats got dusty. I found Scott through one of my neighbors who has been using him for his brownstone for decades. I certainly intend to do the same."

"I recently closed on my new-build condo in Stuyvesant Heights area of Brooklyn this past March 2023, & needed a local general contractor to execute a long list of works to bring my designs for the unit to life & add some character to it. When I contacted Waxtel LLC, Dave (owner) priced the large job I requested (general contractor, electrical, and plumbing works) reasonably within my budget, was very responsive, & kept communication clear. Rich (PM) helped support the contractor team in execution of the works, but myself/husband did have to handhold some of the contractor works to ensure it was done on time & met our quality standards."

"Anthony, Allison and Luis were a a refreshing group of people to work with on a contracting job. We had a bathroom repair that went horribly with another contractor, so we needed someone and come in to fix the prior job before things got worse. Luis and Anthony put together a proposal and got right to it. We had to have our new shower floor ripped out, the drain and piping replaced, a new custom shower pan installed, new shut-off valves, repair the shower head, replace wall tiles and remove and replace all of the grout. They showed up every day within their half-hour window and worked a full day. They were very respectful of our home and our space. The work they did to replace the previous shoddy work was spectacular. We no longer have to worry about leaking pipes and damaged fixtures. Luis was on site most days to oversee how things were going. And if he wasn't there in person, he was always available by phone to answer questions. Since we had potential subrogation claims against the previous contractor, we needed to document EVERYTHING as we went along. They were very patient with us and letting us take multiple photos and clearly explaining everything they were doing. Luis was also incredibly knowledgeable and was informing us of potential problems before they happened. We went to get the grout that we were told by the previous contractor to use. With one look and feel THROUGH THE PLASTIC BAG Luis was able to tell us that it was the wrong grout which was what led to many of our problems with the walls. We simply returned it for the unsanded grout which was the industry standard for wall tile. We further had Anthony and his team rip out the drywall in an overhang outside and install lights, an outlet, insulation and then repair damaged drywall from the original plumbing job. Everything was perfect. Very clean and professional job. We would highly recommend Anthony and his team again. They are very professional, knowledgeable and do great work!"

Customers say: Quick response

"It's rare to hear "I love my contractor" but that's what Tony's Contracting Group was to us. My husband & I had a gut renovation of our prewar bathroom. After interviewing 4 contractors, we chose Tony's Contracting Group and we're so happy we did! From the start to finish Tony was either on site or reachable by phone. He helped in the design planning and the workmanship from his team was excellent. They ran into some plumbing issues when they started the demo and Tony was vigilant in making sure these issues were resolved and up to code. It's very evident that Tony is a man of his word, trustworthy, and has a very high standard for customer service. We won't hesitate to endorse him and will use him the next time we need renovation work. Kudos to Tony and his team!"

"I hired BEX Contracting to do a major renovation on my aunt apartment as i was preparing to sell it. I could not be more happy with the outcome., Bex and his team did a fabulous job painting the apartment, restraining the floor and remodeling my kitchen including installing a new countertop and sand and staining kitchen cabinets. Bex is very courteous and reliable, he over communicates and the whole process was a breeze - i cannot recommend BEX Contracting enoguh!"

"Hiring Elson, Ardi and their team was a great choice from Day One. Their proposal was well conceived, the price was very competitive, and the work was completed on time and on budget. Dismantling and removing the old roof deck on our co-op in midtown Manhattan and replacing it entirely with a well designed new one was a big job but was finished remarkably quickly. Plus, Elson made several recommendations that greatly improved final result. As President of our co-op, I would unequivocally recommend this company."

"I called Mario to get an estimate on remodeling my bathroom. He called me back quickly and let me know the approximate cost. He offered to come out and take a look. He came out that weekend so my husband could meet with him as well. He was very professional and answered all the questions we asked. He offered information on specific items that would work well in our bathroom. We had gotten other estimates that were quite a bit more and had felt that the contractor must have thought that we were naive. Mario gave a very fair price and had the experience and the great reviews that we were looking for. He seemed very trustworthy and we decided to go with him. He started on-time on a Monday morning. He consulted with me before each item was installed or when there was a problem. I was always confident that the job would be completed satisfactorily since Mario was so detail oriented and eager to please. We made a few changes during the project and Mario had no issues. We changed the vanity and Mario was happy to come out a week after the project was supposed to be completed to install it. When the vanity did arrive the top was broken and Mario came out again to install that. He was very patient. Mario showed up everyday on time. At the end of each day, he met with me and discussed what he did that day and what he would do the next. He always cleaned up each day after he was done. He was cheerful and easy going and it was really a joy to have him and his vast knowledge of construction. We plan on redoing our front porch and our kitchen in the future and we will definitely call Mario."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Using a steel frame may raise the value of your home. Steel is more heat resistant, has better longevity, and doesn’t need any upkeep compared to traditional wood. You can also customize a steel build a little easier than other materials like brick, concrete, and vinyl—which have trouble bending and adapting to renovations.

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.

Building involves setting foundation posts, framing with durable wood, adding roofing support, and protecting from elements with water-resistant finishes.

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

You can choose 5/8-inch plywood or 3/4-inch plywood—anything thinner than these sizes may not withstand the impact of debris propelled by strong winds or can be easily torn off by intruders. Remember that the durability of the wood board is crucial, particularly for safeguarding your windows during severe storms. The effectiveness of using wood boards for protecting the investment you made in your home relies on using the appropriate material and ensuring proper installation.
