"Highly recommend Affordable Roofing for a professional, stress-free roof replacement. From the first call through Angie’s list, Rick and Nick understood the assignment of getting my 30 yr old flat roof inspected for tears or punctures. They did find ponding water and problems associated with the drainage and it was all fixed, complete with a full aluminum coating. His quote was competitive and the follow through was top notch. Having a free biannual roof inspection and a 25 yr warranty for insurance purposes reinforces their competency . Would definitely hire again."

"I called RRS for leak repair in my hot rolled bitumen roof. The previous summer I had spent 10k to have the entire roof redone (the work was not done by RRS). Less than a year later I had a massive leak in my roof, creating a water fall in my living room. RRS was hired to fix this leak and to do some preventative work, including re-caulking a 20x15 ft skylight and adding custom metal coping along the parapet walls. I was hard on these guys, but they were always pleasant & took great care in doing the work to high standards. The coping & custom metal work was fantastic - cut to the exact millimeter and perfectly shaped."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Yes, in many cases, homeowners insurance does cover roof damage caused by snow. For instance, if your roof collapses during a snowstorm or an ice dam results in a ceiling leak, your policy should cover repair costs. However, for a claim to be approved, the roof must have been well-maintained and in good condition before the snow-related damage occurred. The payout, whether full or partial, can also vary depending on the age of your roof and its overall condition prior to the snowfall. It is always best to review your specific homeowners insurance policy to understand the details of your coverage and any potential exclusions.

Just like when you’re shingling a roof, you can install felt underlayment under a metal roof, but a synthetic underlayment like adhered ice and water shield is the best option. These use adhesives rather than mechanical fasteners, so you have fewer penetrations going through your roof deck and a lower risk of leaks. Ice and water shield is also easier to install because you don’t need additional tools or fasteners to attach it to the roof deck.

Roll roofs don’t last as long as traditional roofs, like those made of asphalt shingles. A roll roof typically lasts between five and 15 years, whereas a shingled roof will last between 20 and 50  years. Modified bitumen roofs are similar in look to rolled roofing but have a 12 to 15 year warranty.

A roof pitch that’s too shallow won’t shed runoff as quickly, so you have an increased risk of water intrusion through the seams between your roofing materials. In colder climates, snow and ice will accumulate more easily on your roof, which can add enough weight to cause roof collapse and structural damage to your home.

The principal, common, and auxiliary rafters are the most frequently used types of rafters. Principal rafters are large and typically appear toward the edges of the roof. Common rafters are smaller than principal rafters. Some people may use a mix of common and principal rafters. The auxiliary rafter is not common, but it provides extra reinforcement for a principal rafter on a large building.
