"After interviewing several HomeAdvisor pros we hired Rrs Builders Corp to restore the facade of our landmark brownstone in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It was the right choice. This local family business devoted time and efforts to every detail of the job, making sure we were happy with the results. Owner Abdul was very responsible and responsive and we highly recommend him."

"Finding good quality windows that would be in the style of our 1926 colonial and be affordable was a challenge. We had the original double-hung mullioned windows all through the house. We wanted windows that would be energy efficient, complement the french doors at the front of the house, and maintain it's character. We went with Marvin replacement windows with a primed wood interior and aluminum clad exterior. Michael gave us a price on the windows that was competitive with other contractors who showed us aluminum clad casement windows only. Michael helped us with our decisions and is incredibly detail-oriented and patient. We used mullioned double-hung windows at the front of the house, (which look great with the original french doors) and used casement windows for the rest. We were able to maintain the look of the house but really appreciate the clean lines and ease of use of the the casement windows as well. Plus they're all easy to clean. When Michael bid on the job he said he was very neat and it would be only be him and one other person doing the job. He said it would take 3 days. I remember he said "you won't even find a staple left over". He was totally true to his word. It took 3 days, he's incredibly neat and a truly nice guy. He's the real deal and I'd recommend his work with wholeheartedly."

Siding questions, answered by experts

Wood siding requires an air gap behind it to allow water to drain out, and for air circulation and venting to allow humid air to escape and keep the material from rotting due to moisture.

The cost of wood siding varies by the type of wood. Engineered wood siding tends to be in the middle of typical costs ($3 to $7 per square foot for materials). Hardwoods, for instance, can cost $5 to $20 per square foot for materials alone, but cedar wood can be as cheap as $3 per square foot.

While almost nothing is completely fireproof, metal siding is extremely fire-resistant. It’s non-combustible so while it may eventually melt in extreme temperatures, it won’t actually light on fire itself. This can add a layer of safety to structures that wood or vinyl siding can’t, making it attractive for industrial use. Metal siding can significantly slow down the spread of a fire, giving extinguishers and firefighters a much better chance at saving the structure and containing the blaze.

There should be small gaps between your roof and the walls of your home, and other buildings. These small gaps let building materials shift, expand, and contract with weather and other outside forces, and they prevent moisture from wicking down walls from roofing and gutter systems. Without these strategic gaps, your home’s exterior and its finishes can sustain water damage, decay, peel, delaminate, and crack. However, there is a fine line between a smart gap and a problematic gap—all  gaps should be small, intentional, and covered or filled in with foam insulation to prevent pests from using them as access points.

Mildew grows into porous wood, making it more difficult to remove than regular dirt (and more destructive). We suggest using a dedicated mildew and mold fungicide to remove mildew, which is found in any local home improvement store. Apply a dose of the fungicide to the siding and leave to work according to the instructions, usually for an hour or two. Then wash it thoroughly away and scrub the spot again. Repeat the process if necessary. If nothing is removing the mildew stains, you should plan on removing those clapboard planks in time, as their damage could cause future problems.
