"While the project I needed Scarano Architect for did not end up being necessary (so I ultimately did not need to hire them), they were incredibly responsive and proactive with my potential needs, talked me through what they could provide me, and quickly gave me a quote. I would definitely reach out to them again if I ever do need an engineer on a project!"

"We had the pleasure of working with Evan, whom we found on Angie's List, and we couldn't be happier with the results. His expertise proved invaluable in converting our 2-bedroom apartment into a spacious and legally compliant 3-bedroom. He skillfully handled the innovative splitting of a large closet to create a new closet for the additional bedroom, ensuring that the modifications met all the necessary building codes and regulations. Throughout the entire project, Evan consistently displayed insightful guidance, proactive problem-solving, excellent communication skills, and remarkable responsiveness. Despite the challenges posed by our persnickety building architect, he remained positive and dedicated. We are immensely satisfied with his tireless efforts in not only transforming our apartment but also ensuring its legal compliance. We highly recommend Evan for his exceptional work. Angie's List truly connected us with an exceptional professional."

"We engaged Gaudioso Construction to perform full-scale gut renovation of the first floor and kitchen remodel at our Forest Hills home. We could not have been happier with the quality of their workmanship and are confident in recommending Gaudioso for the most complicated projects. Gaudioso’s team of carpenters, plumbers, electricians, tilers, sheetrockers, and painters were all skilled and quite prideful of their craft. Gaudioso’s guys were not your typical get in and get out, cut corners at every turn kind of workers. They all worked methodically and meticulously spending the time where time needed to be spent. While pictures of the end product are always great, one needs to see a project from beginning to end to fully understand the skills needed to ensure your walls are straight, your pipes don’t clog, your electric doesn’t spark, your floors (and hence your cabinets) are level, and and every inch of your remodeled space feels exactly right. Gaudioso’s people have mastered those skills which is seen in the photos. The project was based on an architect’s drawings and was subject to inspection by the NYC buildings department. The project consisted of the following in order of complexity: - Bearing wall separating a terrible galley kitchen from the dining room was removed - A 20ft steel beam installed to support second floor of house (in place of bearing wall) - Steam heating pipes within the walls were re-routed to make way for a kitchen island - Waterlines and waste lines to the bathrooms above were all re-routed to make way for a higher ceiling and increased floor area - Existing kitchen plumbing completely removed, replaced and relocated - Electric in kitchen completely removed, replaced and brought to code (incl. upgraded breaker box) - Complete reframing & sheetrocking of the entire space - Non-bearing wall removed, ceiling, adjacent wall, and floor repaired and matched with existing - Cabinets, lighting fixtures, faucets and etc all installed - Floors removed, replaced and finshed. All of the items above and numerous other ancillary items were completed within the expected timeframe and without any matters of concern. On matters of preference, Gaudioso addressed in a way that told us they wanted us to be happy. One last thing, if you’ve read this far. Gaudioso took ownership of anything his people did touch or (what he believed) should have touched. During the course of the project there were two unexpected occurrences. In both these situations, most contractors would have thrown their hands up and said “that’s your problem”. Gaudioso, without being asked, scoped the occurrences into his realm of responsibility and fixed both issues at his own expense. Any project comes with its heartaches, especially one of this scale. It’s best to hire a contractor with a strong track record and people that are up to the task. Gaudioso is one you can rely on to get the job done without the typical contractor issues."

High end architect specializing in making a house feel like home!\nI make people’s dream homes a reality. There is nothing more satisfying to me then improving the quality of life for my clients and giving them a house that they are able to make into their homes.\nI have been a licensed architect since 2015 and am currently registered in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Maine and Massachusetts. With my NCARB certificate I am able, if necessary, to obtain reciprocal licensure throughout the country in a short time period. \n\nI am inspired by our local built environment, humble materials, classical building forms and traditional building details. I have a strong interest in the reinterpretation of classical building forms, blended with contemporary open floor plans. \nI have a stronger interest in helping to guide my clients to ways of improving the quality of their lives through adapting the built environment to meet their needs.

"Permit Architects was fantastic. Esther, George, and their team helped get our renovation plans approved by our building's co-op board and DOB. The process was smooth and fast. I highly recommend them and would definitely work with them again."

Small jobs welcome

"I had the pleasure of building two new homes with Jo Machinist in the past few years . I was looking for an architect that can put my imagination into reality . The project called for 2 homes on a horse farm, one for the horse trainer and one for the caretaker of the property . We wanted something that spoke to the style of the farm. Homes that had an interesting design and were functional to the operation. Jo hit the nail on the head so to speak. She designed the homes with style and functionality. Each house has high ceilings, open layout, with patios and porches plus mud room access which is important considering the elements the property deals with. She convinced me to upgrade all windows to larger sizes which added lots of natural light to living space. The final result upgraded the look of the property. I am very happy with the finished product and highly recommend working with her . She not only Provides the technical and architectural part of the project, in every step of the process she takes design and functionality into consideration."

Architects questions, answered by experts

You likely need to hire an architect for your new house design and build, unless you have the design skills and experience with building regulations and standards needed to get your plans approved. If you are able to meet the design requirements, you can hire a draftsperson to create the blueprints for the builders to follow.

While classic Palm Springs architecture in the Palm Springs area will naturally cost more due to the high cost of living, prices across the rest of the country will vary. Remember that older homes, including those built before 1970, will cost more to renovate due to updated building codes—something to keep in mind when considering the upfront cost of the house.

Start by researching local contractors with experience in cottage construction. Ask for references, check licensing and insurance, and review completed projects. Compare multiple bids, making sure each includes the same scope of work. A good contractor will communicate clearly, provide a detailed contract, and ensure all work meets code and safety standards.

While the Arts and Crafts movement inspired many architectural elements, the primary styles from the time include Craftsman, Tudor Revivals, bungalows, and Mission homes. You'll see elements of these styles in homes, churches, museums, and schools—particularly Country Day schools from the era.

Greek Revival and Federal architecture are quite similar in that they focus on symmetry and a blend of utilitarianism and opulence, but they differ in a few key areas. First, Federal architecture tends to include a brick facade, whereas Greek Revival homes more often have stucco siding, much like you’d find in Mediterranean houses. Greek Revival homes also tend to be a bit more ornate, with columns as decor, and more decorative and formal porticos.
