"Mike has over 30 years experience in cabinetry work. We hired him to “reface” our old kitchen and bathroom cabinets. I decided not to replace the entire set of cabinets because they were in good shape overall. The doors and hinges were just coming apart and the wood was cracking in these. But the “boxes” were sturdy. I had consulted with a few other companies prior to meeting with Mike, and replacing the cabinets would have also involved changing out our countertops, sinks, and potentially appliances as well as altering our existing plumbing. It would have required wall painting touch up too. I didn’t want the hassle and expense of all of that. Refacing turned out to be a much easier process. Mike came out himself several times prior to doing the job to look at our old cabinets and to bring me stain samples so I could pick just the right color for our home. He was on time, and he and his wife Jennifer make a great team! They removed all the old doors and drawer fronts, sanded down the old cabinet boxes, and applied a thin but strong new wood stained layer to all the visible surface areas. They then replaced the doors and drawer fronts with new ones, complete with new better soft-closing hinges. Mike cut the stained facing material on site to the correct dimensions and Jenn glued it in place, fine trimmed it, and rounded all the edges so they are smooth and perfectly bonded together. The end result looked brand new and professional. It gave a whole new look to our kitchen and bathroom. Mike also installed some pullout cabinet organizers for our pots and pans that make it much easier to access these items. And he replaced some drawer hardware to allow for smoother opening and closing of these drawers. The price for doing this job came in much less than the big box store estimates we had gotten previously and without the major disruption of complete cabinet replacement. The only hassle was having to empty our cabinets prior to them arriving. But this gave me an opportunity to get rid of old items that we never use anyway. It took about a week for them to complete the job from start to finish. And the dust from the work was pretty minimal. Mike and Jenn were pleasant to have around during that week. We highly recommend them!"

"Joseph Martinez and his crew made my home so pretty! They had extra work to do with all our old woodwork, and priming that they hadn’t anticipated. They got the job done in less time than projected and I couldn’t be happier. Communication by text, phone, email, and in person were all timely and very clear. They were friendly and respected all my wishes about when to do which room, and when I needed cleaning done at a time they might not have chosen. Totally recommend them. Now we’re ready to get ready for staging! (These are pictures in process, not the finished product)."

Cabinet Contractors questions, answered by experts

Yes, as long as the doors match the dimensions of your old cabinets and use compatible hinges. This method works best if you are using similar materials and door styles that match your existing cupboards. If you’re choosing significantly different materials, like moving from fiberboard to hardwood, then it’s usually best to replace the entire cabinet.

Careful measurement is crucial—measure multiple times and account for hardware thickness, seasonal wood movement, and clearance requirements. Test-fit components before final assembly, and consider building one drawer as a prototype before cutting materials for multiple units.

We recommend installing wall cabinets first so the base cabinets aren’t in the way. This order also prevents damage to the base cabinets if you drop tools or materials when installing the upper cabinets.

Whether you install flooring before or after kitchen cabinets depends primarily on the type of flooring you are using. For materials like hardwood, tile, and sheet flooring, the best practice is to install the flooring first. This ensures the cabinets are installed at the correct height and on a stable surface. However, you should not install cabinets on top of floating floors, such as laminate or luxury vinyl plank (LVP). These types of flooring need room to expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes. Placing heavy cabinets on top can restrict this movement, potentially causing the floor to buckle and making the cabinets unstable. For floating floors, install the cabinets first and then lay the flooring up to them. Other reasons to consider installing cabinets before the flooring include saving money on materials (since you won't need flooring under the cabinets) and avoiding potential damage to your new floor during cabinet installation. Additionally, installing cabinets directly on the subfloor might prevent voiding your flooring's warranty.

If you have a drawer larger than 30 inches, you should consider adding two pulls, but, again, this decision is up to personal preference. Any pro you work with on cabinet installation can help you determine how many pulls you need and where you should place them.
