Installation left a lot to be desired. The installers ripped out my plumbing carelessly and caused a big leak. I tried to keep emptying pails of water while the sink leaked while my husband took off from work to try to find a cap for the line. He couldn't find a cap. While I was bailing water, one of the work man stole my $200 faucet which is only a year old, saying "gee I didn't think you wanted it". Then we did not get all the pieces back for the faucet when I told him I did want my faucet. We agreed to pay the installers to fix our plumbing when they were done, but since pieces were missing they claimed they did not have time to fix the plumbing. They should not have taken my sink parts out to their trucks without asking me if I wanted them! And then they wanted to leave me with a major amount of water flooding my kitchen. I refused to sign off on the job and then finally, after 4 hours of me bailing water and my husband taking off work to try to find a cap, the guy in charge went and got a cap for the water line out of his truck and charged me $10 for it. Why didn't he cap the leak hours before if he had the right piece all along? Is it funny to watch us run around trying to control a flood for hours? What a terrible way to treat a customer. And seriously - I'm spending $2500 and they can't provide a $10 cap to prevent a flood? And they need to use a plastic bag for the pieces they take off my sink, dishwasher, faucet, spray, it just crazy to take the pieces of my plumbing out to their trucks!! I have to replace everything because many parts are gone. It will cost me hundreds of dollars because they were careless with my plumbing parts. They were so busy loading anything they could reuse into their trucks that they never asked me if perhaps I would like to reuse some of my plumbing myself.
My kitchen was left wet and torn apart (drawers out, everything disconnected - even the dishwasher was not secured to cabinets like their work order says they will do. My sink, disposal, faucet, and dishwasher pieces were lost so we can't reconnect them, everything from below the sink is in the middle of the floor, all the electric is now exposed because they don't cut the covers where the back splash comes up to them. My kitchen looks like a war zone.). Have a plumber standing by before these guys come to your house, all they care about is putting in the counter top and they obviously do not care if they leave you flooded and lose your plumbing parts. The counter looks good, but my plumbing is completely destroyed and that was not necessary. One was to be a wall cabinet with a door on one side and open on the other with adjustable shelves. The other was to be a base cabinet with a tip-out hamper compartment (to hold a wire and fabric insert I had already obtained) and a countertop. He inspected the area and made notes and measurements. His later estimate was very reasonable and I asked him to continue. Then the delays and failures to respond began. Instead of the three weeks he promised, it stretched to five and I was never able to get in touch with him except to leave messages. When he showed up he apologized about "family problems" and proceeded to install the cabinets. I immediately noticed that the cabinets, which I asked to be painted white, were painted with flat paint. Who uses flat paint in a bathroom environment? I decided to let that go, but then he found that the base cabinet did not fit the insert I had him carefully measure and had to be rebuilt. Also, there was no interior structure to support the wire frame; just a tip-out door. I asked for the cabinet to be rebuilt, and admitting there may have been miscommunication, offered to pay for the redo. Weeks later, he returned with the base cabinet rebuilt. This time the counter top was not measured correctly and was too narrow for the width of the space. He tried to make a cut to fit around the room door frame, but used a hand jigsaw and the result was a ragged, uneven cut. Again he said the countertop needed to be rebuilt and left (with my extra money for the rebuild). His last words were "This is a cluster." I also noticed that he made no provision to fill the gaps between cabinet and walls, or cabinet and floor, but left a gap of 1/4 inch on one side, 3/4 inch on the other, and 1/2 inch between the base cabinet and floor. The cabinets themselves seem very cheaply made and the flat paint leaves the impression of an unfinished product. My walls were damaged during the installation. It has now been an additional month and Scot has not contacted me or returned my messages. My next move is to see an attorney. DO NOT hire this person; he is unprofessional, unresponsive, and provides very poor workmanship.
UPDATE 2/24/2015: After many calls threatening court action (which I followed up on with detailed paperwork to be served by the County Sheriff) Scot finally returned my calls and said he would finish the work. He came and measured for molding to close the gaps with the walls and apologized for all the hassles. He did not return my calls for a couple of months (my travel schedule was part of the problem). He then came and installed the molding, but forgot a final piece of molding. He made measurements of this piece and went away. He did not return my calls for a couple of weeks but finally called and said he had "lost" his measurements and had to come back to repeat them. He did that and then again became completely unresponsive to my calls for weeks. I will now have to either follow through with court action, or simply have the cabinets torn out and replaced by someone who knows what he is doing. In the delays, the countertop has sagged about 1/4 inch and knots have opened up on the countertop, indicating raw unseasoned wood used. There is at this point about 20 minutes of work to be done to finish the job, but Scot will not respond and finish it. This experience has been so terrible that I am almost willing to eat the $800 I paid him and find an actual professional to build me a real cabinet. I was initially willing to pay about $2000 but cannot find a cabinet maker who wants to do excellent work. I showed them the items to be moved, maybe a single truck load, two at most. Five minutes after they started, they got mad at an imagined slight and decided to leave. We had been completely cordial up to that point. I encouraged them to stay and work for the time I had contracted. They wanted to come back the next day, but I had the truck reserved for one day only, and had already started moving a saltwater fish tank that needed to be finished that day. I got my son to talk to them and he was able to convince them to move three items, two of which were the fish tank and cabinet. My son had to help them move all three items. They worked for half an hour total, then wanted me to give them the payment code for two hours of work. They harassed me, threatened calling the police, argued loudly in the street in front of my new neighbors, etc. I finally gave them the code, but that was a mistake on my part. Now I have little recourse against them. I'm not sure exactly what the real problem was. It could have been that they had another job to go to, or that they felt they weren't up to the job at my site, or perhaps this is their personality. At any rate, I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING JOHN'S MOVING ANGELS FOR ANY PURPOSE. WORST and quot;PROFESSIONALand quot; I'VE DEALT WITH IN 20 YEARS. However, the sheer number of errors was exhausting. Sloppy workmanship and failure to pay attention to munufacturers' installation instructions were common. The promised water seal over the cement board joints on the floor and wall did not appear – after bragging about how it was an “extra step” they routinely did for quality, it was deemed “not necessary.” They failed to shim my old wall studs and so were forced to apply up to 1 ½ inches of mastic over bowed cement board to get a flat tile installation. The mastic was not given sufficient time to cure and the wall tiles therefore are flawed, with raised edges and corners, and uneven grout lines. Their tile cutting equipment was not capable of smooth cuts on the expensive Italian porcelain tile I chose, so they charged me extra for polishing the small chips out of the cut edges, and made so many bad cuts that they nearly ran out of tile, of which I had purchased 15% extra. They used PEX tubing instead of copper on the shower faucet installation, in direct contradiction to the manufacturer’s directions, which they did not bother to read, so had to return to correct the resultant “shower rise” problem that resulted. The fix then leaked which required tearing out drywall behind the shower for the second time. The unsanded grout they used on my decorative glass tile strip in the shower is cracked, and the tile pieces are uneven and of varying depth into the very thick mastic layer. It took them at least three tries to arrange the sink supply plumbing to fit inside the semi-pedestal they knew from the start must cover the plumbing. My sink and medicine cabinet are offset from the vanity light above by about an inch, which cannot be corrected without ripping out and replacing the expensive wall tile. I have had to spend many hours sanding, puttying, and spackling, to prepare for paint walls and ceiling that were supposed to be made “paint-ready.” In removing my bathroom door to bring in the new tub, they split the door wood on one corner, and didn’t bother to inform me. They used heavy decking screws and an impact driver to apply trim work to the exterior of the new window, leaving large gouged holes in the trim and sill to be filled and sanded – not “paint ready.” Baseboard was installed with a nail gun which split the wood in two places. Overall the workmanship was substandard, and I have just discovered the mess where they dumped their water bucket after grouting and drywall spackling, carefully hidden under one of my juniper bushes. In my view, two local handyman types without proper equipment for the job do not constitute a “German Quality” workforce. I got “handyman” quality for almost $13000., plus I supplied the tub, sink, plumbing fixtures, vanity light, tile, grout, and medicine cabinet, for an additional cost of about $3000. To be fair, I do not believe that Bruno’s workers intentionally produced sloppy work; I believe they did the best job of which they are capable. Perhaps the most unprofessional aspect of the interaction was that exactly seven days after I received via email the invoice for the remodeling (there was still some custom cabinetry to be done), I received another email dunning me for payment and placing the cabinetry work, which I assumed based on our discussions that Bruno was working on, “on hold until payment is received.” The invoice contained an un-itemized charge of almost $700 for “extra material,” which they refused to adequately explain. I paid the invoice under protest, and have cancelled any further work and will hire someone else to come in and fix what can be fixed. I cannot recommend The Home Construction Doctor, LLC. I would not hire them again. They are good at demolition, and probably rough carpentry, and the like. Do not hire them for plumbing, tile work, or for any fine finish work, especially if it requires measuring carefully and adding or subtracting fractions of an inch. If you expect a contractor to bring in qualified subcontractors for important aspects of a remodeling job, this is not the person to hire. If you need a handyman job done, this may be a good choice, although expensive, and beware unexplained late charges.
UPDATE 9/18/13: I feel that I must reply to The Home Construction Doctor's response to my initial review. I am disappointed that in an effort to distract attention from the point of my review, namely his poor quality of work, Bruno chose to bring up issues that are irrelevant to the outcome of the job. He says correctly that I had a bad experience in trying to order some fixtures online. But most of the materials came undamaged and in fact the issue was completely resolved before the job started, except for the tub drain, where the manufacturer specified the wrong model, which was easily replaced locally. Also, Bruno is fully aware that the incorrect tile order was the fault of the tile vendor, who was able to supply the correct tile within a week, which delayed the finish of the job slightly. Note that I did not complain about the duration of the job, since that was beyond Bruno's control. His workers were unable to cut my tile not because of brittleness (porcelain tile is of course brittle) but lack of proper equipment. Their tile cutting saw was old and poorly maintained, and not capable (or the workers were not) of straight cuts, as evidenced by the results. Clearly, Bruno's workers had never had to deal with this type of Italian porcelain. The late charges were not "fully itemized" and I was in fact dunned for payment one week after receipt of the invoice. Bruno's citation of his awards does not change the result of my job, where there are many very obvious and visible instances of poor workmanship, including faulty tile installation and misalignment of the sink, mirror, and vanity light. These defects are available for inspection by anyone considering hiring The Home Construction Doctor, by request. I wonder what workforce Bruno was employing when his business was very active and he earned these awards. Presumably they were more qualified and competent than the workers he assigned to my job. I am now in possession of a very expensive bathroom remodel that is very disappointing to me and that cannot be fixed for any reasonable cost. Again, the visible results of the job are evidence that my complaints are valid, and are available for anyone to verify. They will easily see the crooked tile cuts, the raised edges and corners, the sunken and raised tiles, the crooked and uneven grout lines, and the misalignment of the sink, mirror and vanity light.

"This was a trial job before a potential kitchen removal. It involved moving our boiler a short distance, walling off the area, fixing the floor, some electrical. The Babcock family themselves professional but didn't follow thru with the subs. The subs were only concerned with doing the fastest, cheapest job they could do (classic example is on the plumbing rework, the plumber substituted PEX for copper and the former isn't rated for the latter job)."

"Bruce Robinson I would unreservedly recommend Lionel Martinez, L Martinez Construction LLC, for any home construction job, from a remodel to a new home build. Lionel is a superb builder as well as an honest businessman. We hired Lionel for a significant construction job on our existing home. Lionel laid out the job in detail, provided a thorough estimate, and came in on budget. Based on that excellent experience, we had him build us a cabin in the mountains. Lionel was an exemplary contractor, laying out the project, establishing both fix prices and allowances based on the component of the job, and stuck to these prices without the shifty add-ons that you get from many contractors. His workmanship is superb, and he has a network of subcontractors who also performed at a high level. He ensured that his workers and subs kept the job site clean and completed the work to his exacting standards, even if that required additional work. Finally, he worked with my wife and me to make sure the finished product would exceed our expectations. In the case of our cabin, there was no mystery about the budget, and no surprises - the cabin came in on budget as well. Having had other experiences with contractors that left us unsatisfied, I can say that from the workmanship to the budget, Lionel Martinez exceeded our expectations in every way."
