Babcock Construction

This was a trial job before a potential kitchen removal. It involved moving our boiler a short distance, walling off the area, fixing the floor, some electrical. The Babcock family themselves professional but didn't follow thru with the subs. The subs were only concerned with doing the fastest, cheapest job they could do (classic example is on the plumbing rework, the plumber substituted PEX for copper and the former isn't rated for the latter job).

The Babcock's have worked on our home over the past six years. From remodeling, to renovation, to repair work. In 2017 they installed a tremendous flagstone and brick courtyard which truly brought the house and garden together. The Babcock family are honest, professional, hardworking people, dedicated to pleasing their clients and a delight to work with. We highly recommend the Babcock's, not only for their building expertise but also for their friendship.

The summer of 2018, we were extraordinarily fortunate to work with the 50-year-old, second generation Santa Fe firm of Babcock Construction known for their expertise in new construction and renovation. We had the benefit of all the Babcock principals of which there are three, the patriarch Joe, who founded the firm in 1968 and his two sons, Richard and Steve each with 45 and 40 years’ experience respectively. All three bring particular specialties, perspectives and gifts to any job. On the team were their long standing first rate sub-contractors: tile setter, electrician, plumber, painter plus their in house carpenters. Our expectations were high, since both of us have backgrounds in new construction, renovation and historic preservation. The job consisted of renovating our Tesuque, NM 3000 sq.’ adobe style stucco house with the work on the garden scheduled for next spring. The three qualities that were present throughout are on-time completion at every stage of the project and attention to a very high level of detail on all aspects of the job. Of equal importance on the job is their overarching belief in solutions, not problems, which dictated each day’s outcome throughout the two and a half months. Other qualities that the three brought were attentive listening and a high degree of collaboration with each other and the clients. This project was a complete success and a pleasurable collaboration also filled with moments of humor and kindness. We recommend them very highly for anything needed done on a house.

They provided outstanding services on time and always provided on time completion at every stage of the project.

We had Babcock build/move a few walls, move our boiler, and move some electrical so our washing machine/dryer could be moved to another room. There was tile flooring done as well. The initial part of the job was fine. But when the subs were involved, things got out of control. The electrician decided to do some things in our boiler room without running it by us. Then a guy adding our dryer duct work decided to do something we explicitly didn't want done. That was fixed, but the more we looked, the more we saw the subs doing whatever they had to do the job quickly, not cleanly. Here we two years later and I am still finding sub-par work - things that make it look *I* did the job on the fly, not a "professional". Examples - the plumber cut out some copper tubing that was part of a heating zone. Rather than copper it back together, he decided to use PEX on a line whose water gets to 200F, above the rating of PEX. He insulated it, however, so one couldn't readily see what he did. Today, admittedly 2 years later, I go into the roof space and find the electrician installed some junction boxes and decided to leave them on the floor. Very quality job work - definitely show up on the next home inspection. Overall Babcock and brothers seemed fine. They choice and oversight of the subs was poor. If you go with them make sure to spec everything out that the subs will do, otherwise they will do it wrong. Fortunately we had them do a relatively small job before a possible kitchen remodel. Glad we didn't have these subs handle a bigger job that needs quality

Great. Babcock Construction is a firm founded on Customer Satisfaction and Integrity. Our Summer 2017 project was to completely redo the kitchen, the masterbath and guest bathroom. The project included adding new big windows and doors, reworking and reframing. After reading the “all too good” reviews for Babcock on Angies List – we gave them a call. We had 4 bids and not the lowest, yet the most promising was Babcock. The workmanship, dedication, quality first and consistent flow of the work got us an early finish on an already aggressive schedule. Every day a consistent crew was here, working a full day and following project plans and talking with us about the ideas, work and suggestions when those oddities of a house came forth! There are 2 things to mention, first the crew. Quality all the way. Talented, interested and engaged in our ideas. Richard, Joe and Steve were always on top of each step. Honest dialogue and finding a positive solution together made this special and so much less stressful. Babcock Construction has a solid recommendation from us.

We were very happy with the work that Babcock did for us. This was an insurance project, and they worked closely with us to make sure that the insurance company had all the information they needed to make a coverage determination. We were needlessly worried about how the specialty paint work would turn out, because they did a fabulous job. As a construction company, they have access to all services required to complete a job, and they kept everyone on the team focused, and moving along according to the established schedule. We would definitely hire them again!

Three generations of Babcocks are involved in this business and working with them was delightful. They responded promptly to our initial inquiry via Angie's List and quickly arranged some initial work so we could have a floor installed. They helped us design a new kitchen and built cabinets to fit it. They also built custom bookshelves for our library. Their work is first-rate. They were efficient and imaginative. Prices were fair and their subcontractors reliable. In short, they were the best contractors we have ever worked with.

We had an excellent overall experience with Babcock Construction. We purchased a home that for the most part had not been updated since it was built in the 80s. We did not have a designer for the update and made all the design decisions ourselves with input from Babcock Construction. The transformation of the house was amazing. We are truly pleased with the quality and craftsmanship of the remodel. Additionally, they completed the work on time under a very aggressive schedule. Steve and Richard Babcock were professional, responsive and honest in all their dealing with us. We highly recommend Babcock Construction and have already done so to friends and family.

The crew showed up on a Monday morning and had the entire project finished by Friday afternoon, including the installation and painting of a new door in the garage.  They were extremely courteous and professional in their work, and didn't try to add additional work that wasn't asked for.

Our family of five lived in the house throughout the renovation, which took more than two months, and so we had a close and gritty look at the whole process.  The entire Babcock crew was unfailingly gentlemanly, considerate, and professional from beginning to end.  They invested themselves in the work, and often had thoughtful and creative suggestions to help turn our tired and dilapidated old home into the joy it is now.  Their cabinetwork and carpentry is just about flawlessly beautiful.  They brought in an excellent electrician who treats his work as an art, and their painters are far and away the best in Santa Fe.

They quickly rectified the inevitable few mishaps along the long way, and promptly took care of the minor odds and ends we discovered after they'd left.

We are extraordinarily pleased with the transformation of our home, and very impressed with the way it was executed.  I recommend Babcock Construction without reservation.

Babcock Construction was asked to give our community estimates.  They called when they said they would call and arrived when they said they would arrive.  They were professional.

Working with Richard, Steve, Justin and the rest of the outfit was terrific! Not only are they really nice guys, they were good problem solvers, always cleaned up any mess and they do high quality work. We were involved at every step with the design and construction from picking the glass to consulting on the install. We were able to review the design and see examples of their work. After several consultations on site, it became apparent a custom was design was essential to meet our needs. They put a lot of effort into making sure our door matched the existing style. The install was complicated (took 2 guys 2 days to install) in that they had to build out the existing jam. We are extremely pleased with the end result. It has really classed up our entrance. Even though we got custom work their pricing was the same or lower than going with a pre-made door installed by a door company. Our front door and screen are the envy of the neighborhood!

We were thinking of doing this remodel work on our house for a long time. Finally, after saving enough money for the job we were searching for a good contractor to do the work. After reading the reviews [here] for Babcock construction we decided to go with them. The level of responsiveness from their company took us by surprise, they produced a detailed quote for the job within a few days and came over to our house to discuss it. We visited Richard's house and we were immediately impressed by the quality of their work. The work at our house was supervised by David Babcock and I really appreciated his attention to detail and punctuality. It was clear that was thinking about the job full time during the work. He would call me almost daily to discuss the progress and tell me the plan for the current day. We were prepared for a lengthy remodel of both spaces, but we were surprised that it took the Babcock guys only 4 weeks. They were showing up every single day on time and cleaning up at the end of each work day. The subcontractors they work with are among the best and most reliable in the Santa Fe area. I was really impressed by the schedule they have the subcontractors coming to my house and doing the work such that there were no interruptions or hang ups. They own a wood working shop  and they made matching french doors for our sun room and a vanity cabinet for our master bathroom (similar to an online photo). As with any job there were a few surprises measurements/fitting errors, which they immediately addressed and offered solutions. To put it simply my interactions with Richard and David Babcock were always cordial and professional and we found their suggestions helpful and useful. 
I have done my share of home renovations projects on my own so I was worried about hiring a contractor to do the work. I found it extremely easy working with them, as they always provided suggestions, but never forced them onto us. I really enjoyed the flexibility they offered in terms of options in our renovation to accommodate our budget. In conclusion we really enjoy our newly-renovated space and we would hire Babcock construction to do any other home remodel in the future.
