Yes, cabinet makers continue to fabricate custom kitchen and other household cabinets for new construction homes. Cabinet makers also replace and renovate existing kitchen cabinets. The cost tends to be higher than choosing manufactured cabinets from a major retailer, but you get the cabinets specially designed and made to fit the unique needs of your space.

It depends on your ceiling height. Wall cabinets are typically mounted 54 inches from the floor. So, if you have eight-foot ceilings, you’ll need 42-inch-high wall cabinets to fill the gap. And you’ll need 54-inch cabinets if you have nine-foot ceilings. But standard-sized cabinets don’t come in 54 inches, so you'll need to stack various sizes together. And, if you have ceilings higher than nine feet, it’s a good idea to have custom stacked cabinets made to fill your space.

There are some tips when hiring a cabinet installer that’ll help prepare you to create a new space. When installing new cabinets, keep the following in mind:

  • Hire the same cabinet installer professional to measure, design, and install the cabinets, as opposed to jumping between companies. 

  • Discuss what types of cabinets the installer offers, including stock, semi-custom, and custom, to give yourself options.

  • Discuss financing options with your installer, as this project can be expensive depending on your chosen cabinets.

  • Discuss your cabinet installer’s prior experience, including asking for photos of previous projects.

The most budget-friendly option is something called a prefabricated cart, which can be placed instead of installed. These units cost anywhere from $150 to $900.
