The hydroseed mix—known as a slurry—helps grass seed take root in many ways. Water combines with the mulch, allowing the grass seed to stay moist while grounded in the soil. The number of bags of topsoil you need depends on the depth you’re filling. The average topsoil is sold in a roughly forty-pound bag, covering 12 square feet at a one-inch depth. Since topsoil is by nature the uppermost layer of soil, you can bet on only needing to fill about 4 to 8 inches of soil depth with it.

The best time to lay mulch depends on the type of mulch and the reason for installing it: 

  • Summer: Adding extra mulch helps soil retain moisture and keeps weeds at bay, allowing plants to thrive. 

  • Fall: Adding mulch helps control weeds and keeps soil and roots warm during the cooler months. Aim to add a layer of mulch 2 to 4 inches deep.

  • Winter: Mulch around perennial plants to help keep them insulated.

  • Spring: Wait until the ground has thawed. Depending on the thickness, add between 1 and 4 inches of mulch to provide freeze and rain protection and enrich the soil.

While organic mulch offers many benefits, it can also attract bugs looking for shelter, food, and water. Insects, rodents, snails, and slugs are often attracted to its decomposing material.

It depends. High-end colored mulch can be fairly costly. However, you'll have to replace less-expensive natural mulches, like pine needles and cedar mulch, more frequently. 

The cost is balanced out somewhat, though, as although you'll have to replace colored mulch less often, you'll have to replenish nutrients in your soil more frequently to make up for the decrease in organic matter and nitrogen from the mulch.
