"Matthew came to do a free inspection of my plumbing.  He noticed some water under the kitchen sink and gave us a very reasonable estimate for that repair.  We ultimately decided to replace the sink and faucet, as the whole setup wasn't in great shape.  Matthew came the next day and did the job; he was punctual and professional, and he did an excellent job.  We are very pleased with how it turned out.

"When I called to schedule my service after our hot water heater suddenly started malfunctioning, the customer service agent was friendly and helpful. She set up an appointment for as soon as possible to get a technician out to examine the heater. I appreciated that they gave me just an hour-long window for when they would be coming, since some companies give you four or five hour windows when you need to be waiting by your phone at home. The two technicians arrived on time and called in advance to let me know they were coming. The main technician seemed knowledgeable and he walked me through all of my options. They had the heater installed the same day in a reasonable amount of time. I could tell that he took care in his work because he re-examined the hot water heater after he installed it to make sure it wasn't leaking. He also offered me extra services that where related to problems we were having (hard water). We weren't planning on having a water filter installed, but he let us know that it could help with the high iron content in our water, which could have been putting a strain on the hot water heater.
I only have two small complaints about the company. The Angie's List coupon, which was one of the main reasons I chose their services, is actually only for ONE service. I let the customer service agent know that I had a coupon up front, but she never told me that it was only for one service. I didn't find out that I could only use it on the largest item on my bill until the technician walked me through the services that I was about to authorize him for. I didn't argue over the price since it was still a good deal, but I think the coupon was misleading since it did not specify that it was on one item only. The other complaint is that I was told that I could get an iron filter for the house, but the technician later said that they did not carry them at the supply warehouse. I feel like he should have been aware of that. I would use their services again and was pleased, but the coupon fine print needs to be added for sure. This is why I put a C for professionalism, because I didn't know where else to categorize this oversight."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

It’s important to find the type of water heater that fits your needs and budget. Depending on the type of water heater, size, brand, and the type of energy you use to heat the water, costs range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. Some of the most common types of water heaters include:

  • Electric: $600–3,500

  • Gas: $700–$2,700

  • Propane: $700–$2,500

  • High efficiency: $1,500–$3,000

  • Indirect: $1,200–$3,500

  • Hybrid heat pump: $1,200–$3,500

No, you’ll need to drain the tank before changing a water heater element, as the water heater element sticks through the side of the tank and uses a gasket to prevent water from pouring out. However, you don’t always need to drain it completely. If you’re only replacing the upper heating element, you can drain the tank until the water line is below the element. If you’re replacing the lower element, you’ll need to drain the whole thing.

Choosing between an electric water heater vs. a gas water heater comes down to personal preference. Overall, electric heaters are more energy efficient than their gas competitors. They’re also quieter to operate, take up less room, and don’t come with a risk of gas leaks.

The downside is that electric water heaters cost more to operate than gas. They might also struggle to heat water fast enough for households that use large amounts of hot water. Lastly, a power outage could cause your electric water heater to stop working, whereas gas water heaters may still function.

Signs your electric water heater is failing include inconsistent water temperature, reduced hot water supply, longer heating times, or discolored water (rusty or cloudy). Unusual noises like popping or rumbling suggest sediment buildup, while leaks or corrosion around the tank signal structural damage. If your unit is over 10 to 15 years old and experiencing frequent issues, it may be time to replace it.

You can use multiple tankless water heaters, but that doesn’t mean you should. Adding multiple tankless heaters adds considerable cost to your home in both parts and installation costs. Also, you’re adding many more points of failure in the system, making plumbing issues harder to diagnose. More heaters mean more maintenance, and insurers may want a word regarding the increased risk of water damage. A single, larger unit makes more sense in most situations.
