"My large deck was in disrepair so badly. Needed some wood replaced, pergola repaired, power wash and stained. The deck is 10-12 feet off the ground, but they managed to do all the repairs, power wash and stain without an issue. What a great job they did. Very professional, reliable and such quality workmanship and affordable. They are definitely the company to go with for almost any job. I’m going to have them paint my ceilings next. Thank you Joe and Backyard Solutions!"

"It went great! I was looking to get my shed finished and Bergens Contracting and Repair was the first to come to mind after they laid a new roof on my house back in2005. The crew came out, did their thing, transformed my shed and cleaned up when they left. Shed looks better than my house now!! I think I know a company that can handle that!"

"If you’re looking for someone that is knowledgeable, reliable and affordable this is your best bet. I am very happy with my deck repairs! Very easy to work with and their website shows all other projects they’ve completed. The neighbors gave us the thumbs up as soon as the completed the job. Looking forward to working with them again on other projects."

"I needed 3 support posts for an elevated deck replaced. Mr. Gutierrez and his crew just completed the project and the workmanship is excellent. I highly recommend Mr. Gutierrez for a most reasonable bid and service. Walter P. in Charlotte."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

Space deck handrail posts four to six feet apart. If the posts are more than six feet apart, the railing will be less able to withstand lateral forces and is more susceptible to breaking. Additionally, railing posts that are more than six feet apart may not be up to code, and you may face fines and be required to reinstall the posts to bring them up to code.

A deck that isn’t attached to a house is called a floating or freestanding deck. These standalone decks are built near ground level, so they usually don’t need deck stairs. Some don’t even require permits. Generally speaking, building a floating deck is faster and more DIY-friendly than constructing one that’s connected to your home.

A deck doesn’t have to be perfectly level. Many pros even recommend a gentle slope to ensure proper drainage and increase longevity. The ideal gentle slope is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the property, leading water away from the home to prevent pooling and reduce the risk of damage. It also minimizes rot, mold, and other moisture-related problems.

Composite decking requires a solid foundation or substructure for support. This base is typically a frame composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame can be built from various materials, such as composite, plastic, timber, or metal, depending on your budget, deck type, and environmental conditions. For maximum stability, a professional deck builder may recommend installing this frame on top of a solid concrete base. It is best to discuss the most suitable substructure design and materials for your specific project with a professional.
