Small jobs welcome

Offers commercial services

I am a licensed Professional Engineer providing structural engineering services for residential and small commercial projects. I work with homeowners, contractors, and design professionals to help move projects through the permit process by providing structural calculations, drawings, evaluations, and engineering letters as needed.\n\nIn-person structural inspections are available in Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia. Remote structural consulting is available in Delaware and North Carolina.\n\nTypical projects include load-bearing wall removal, beam and header sizing, additions, decks, foundation concerns, and framing evaluations. My goal is to provide practical, code-compliant structural solutions that are clear, efficient, and tailored to the project.

"John was awesome to work with! We are working on a (heavy) outdoor project on my deck and needed to ensure that our deck, which is on the 2nd level, could support the weight. This was my first time ever needing to work with a structural engineer, but John was so great in explaining everything to me. After visiting my house, he ran his calculations and then provided me with everything needed to add the required supports. Highly recommend John!"

"I needed an engineer to evaluate a mortar crack in the side of my brick house in order to refinance our home. We were on a time crunch in which I called the engineer that morning and needed his evaluation faxed to the loan processor by 5:00 pm that evening. Mr. Colvin was able to accomodate us and fax his report (favorable) in the time frame needed."

Yes, an LVL beam is more affordable than the cost of a steel I-beam, totaling between $50 and $200 per linear foot as opposed to the $100 to $400 per linear foot you’d pay for a steel I-beam. Not only is the wood material more affordable than steel, but it’s also more similar to traditional wooden beams and doesn’t require as much retrofitting to connect joists.

It is not recommended to cut or drill into LVL (laminated veneer lumber) beams. As major structural components of a home, their composite structure can be compromised by alterations, which can weaken them and lead to cracking over time. If you must make modifications to an LVL beam, it is crucial to consult a structural engineer or general contractor first. A professional can advise on whether it's safe and provide specifics on the appropriate bit size, depth, and directionality for any necessary drilling.

Yes, professionals reinforce the foundation with additional supports or piers to prevent future sinking.
