"We discovered the leak Labor Day. Called another company who listed a 24 hour emergency line. Wasn't worth the cost. The normal price they quoted was about $40-50 per hour more than I expected. Called a couple of other plumbers first thing Tuesday morning who I've used previously and who have pretty typical rates for the area, but they weren't available. Robert from Maplewood Plumbing was available and on site within 90 minutes of my call. He was dressed and acted professionally. He actually explained what he was doing and why (things he'd seen done wrong on other jobs) with similar situations. In our case, the floor installers some 5 or so years ago only put in wax rings to seal the toilet without adding spacers to effectively raise the flange so the seal remained solid. It took him a little over an hour to complete the work, but I'm confident the proper repair was done for the long term. (Unfortunately, based on what he told me, the plumber who came out to respond to the same situation a couple of months ago regarding our master bath toilet that did the exact same thing only replaced the wax ring, but did not install the spacers. Hopefully it will hold a few years or until we get new toilets for those bathrooms.)

"Could not have been better. Ran into a scheduling issue with another plumber. Called Kirkwood Plumbing on Monday, they were able to schedule us for the next day. Gave them the info from the original plumber's proposal and they agreed to match the cost and work. Plumber was running late due to very heavy traffic. Called 45 minutes before the scheduled appointment to let us know he might be a little late. Arrived only 10 to 15 minutes late, which was fine with us since he had called. Got right to work and finished within a few hours."

"Called Express service plumbing to fix a couple PVC waste pipes that were broke as well as running new lines to a mudroom sink. They came out the next day and had it knocked out in a couple hours. They were very professional and courteous. I’ve already recommended Express Service to a couple friends that were looking for a plumber."

Customers say: Quick response

"Jacob and Cody have been amazing to work with. We originally hired them to repair our stairs and have since contracted with them to install our kitchen tile floor, install electric in our kitchen island and to repair some of our drywall. Their team is very professional, their estimates are accurate and they do quality work. We plan to hire them again when we remodel our bathrooms."

"Nick G. Is professional, punctual and friendly. I had a leak coming from the kitchen sink and draining to my basement. This leak would have rotted the floor and caused considerable damage. Upon discovering this , I contacted my son, Clint Ehman, an electrician for Hoffman, to get a referral . Nick G. came out today, diagnosed the problem and fixed it. Nick fixed the problem and made my day so much better. The cost was fair and the work he did is exceptional. A shout out to a job well done. We will recommend Nick G. to family and friends."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

No, you can’t convert a gravity-flush toilet to a pressure-assist toilet. Pressure-assist toilets include a tank-within-the-tank, and a standard gravity-flush toilet doesn’t have a capability to include the additional tank. If you want the benefits of a pressure-assist toilet, you’ll have to make the investment in a new one.

One of the many benefits of a pressure-assist toilet is how long it lasts. You can expect a well-maintained one to last up to 30 years. That's five years longer than a standard gravity-fed toilet, so it can be a worthwhile investment if you’re willing to spend more on your toilet installation.

Yes, frozen pipes can prevent a toilet from working correctly. If the pipes are frozen, water cannot flow, which means your toilet tank won't be able to refill after a flush. This will prevent the toilet from flushing again. Depending on which lines are frozen, the ice can also block the drain pipe, preventing water from flushing away.

As a temporary workaround, you can manually add water to the tank for each flush. To clear a frozen drain pipe, you can try filling the toilet bowl or tank with warm water and flushing to help thaw the ice. However, the best long-term solution is to unfreeze the pipes to get your toilet back in working order.

You definitely can over-tighten toilet tank bolts. Unlike some other materials, porcelain can’t bend or flex, so when you over-tighten a screw into it, it could break against the added pressure. Only tighten them as much as needed to keep them in place and firm; any more and you could risk breaking the porcelain.

While technically possible, it is unlikely that a clogged toilet will fix itself. Clogs caused by water-soluble materials like toilet paper or human waste may eventually break down in the water, allowing flow to resume. However, this can take time, and any clogs from solid objects require manual removal. In most scenarios, especially if you don't have another bathroom, it is best to fix the clog yourself or call a plumber.
