"Kirkwood Plumbing is represented by very capable plumbers, does its work without surprises, and has a very strong commitment to customer satisfaction. For those reasons I give it an A rating. Below is the story. I needed to have the upper stack of the toilet replaced and have a new toilet installed. Of the 3 companies I called, only Kirkwood Plumbing sent a master plumber, a plus. Paul was very observant and identified the least intrusive manner I was chip to complete the tasks, which in an old home, was not simple. Although not the least expensive bid, I accepted it based on the confidence Paul inspired. That was a very good decision. Greg arrived on time at the appointment date and immediately went to work. He is a capable plumber who worked very hard and efficiently, a plus. He had a great manner with his assistant and it was a pleasure to observe them working together. Greg was determined to leave me with running water and a functional toilet by the time he had to leave, and that was much appreciated. To that end, however, he did not take the time to go back to get the correct saw to cut through the cabinet and wall and thus created sufficient dust particles to saturate the air. Nor did he go back to get the correct shut off valve so he didn't install one. Those were negatives. After he left, I noticed that I could no longer open the faucets in the bathroom so I got in touch with Kirkwood plumbing. They immediately rescheduled a return visit, a positive. Greg attended to the issues that remained but couldn't repair the faucet problem. Although he was convinced that he did not cause this problem, he called Jason in to take over, another plus. Jason is a very thoughtful, methodical plumber who calmly and efficiently repaired the problem. I don't know if he thought this issue was a separate or related problem but he refused any additional payment that I offered, another plus."

"Called Express service plumbing to fix a couple PVC waste pipes that were broke as well as running new lines to a mudroom sink. They came out the next day and had it knocked out in a couple hours. They were very professional and courteous. I’ve already recommended Express Service to a couple friends that were looking for a plumber."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Basement toilets don’t always need a pump. However, it is the most common setup because plumbing systems use gravity to move waste away from the home. Basement toilets often sit below the home’s main sewage system, and installing a sewage ejector pump pushes the wastewater and sewage up to the main sewer line. Alternatively, you can use an upflush or macerator toilet that breaks down the waste and pushes it straight to the main sewer line rather than via a sewer line from the bathroom.

Hiring an emergency plumber is expensive because of the urgency and inconvenience, but there are a few things you can do to help keep costs down:

  • Minimize water damage by shutting off your water main

  • Clean up pooling water immediately to reduce damage and mold growth

  • Avoid using fixtures if you have a clog or septic system backup

  • Verify that your plumber is licensed before hiring

  • Call a few plumbers for estimates if you can afford a short delay in getting service

Start by gutting the old fixtures and features that need to be removed, such as the tile, vanity, and flooring. You may benefit by removing the toilet, even if you intend to use the same one. Next, install the new shower or tub, followed by the flooring, and then the drywall, which you should then paint. After that, install your new cabinets, vanity, countertop, sink, and faucet, in that order. Replace your light fixture next. Lastly, reconnect the toilet.

The biggest sign that your flange leaks is if you notice water at the base of the toilet. The cause is likely due to a poor flange installation, so you might have issues with loose bolts, an uneven flange, or a cracked plastic flange. Add a deteriorating wax seal to this, and you have a recipe for disaster. The best solution is to shut off the water valve, replace the toilet flange, and seal it with a new wax ring.

To test for toilet leaks, use water coloring in the water tank and see if the water slips into the bowl from the tank. This test will indicate if there’s a problem with the flapper or refill tube. You can also put water coloring in the bowl of the toilet to see if there is a leak there. If there is, you should see the colored water on the outside of the toilet bowl or on the floor.
