"Jeff was excellent to work with, provided excellent advice and did an excellent job replacing our countertop and installing a new back splash. As the former manager of the Consumer Services Division for the Minnesota Attorney General's Office I have had the opportunity to deal with many contractors I only wish they were all like Jeff."

Small jobs welcome

"Other contractors hardly call back especially for small jobs, but Twin City Tiling called right away and came out to view and quote the work. The small job was quickly scheduled and is now done. Looks nice!"

Customers say: Quick response

"Chad, Rick and the team worked tirelessly to deliver the highest quality of customer service. From the beginning of the remodel to the end they listened to our needs and helped us make good decisions as we remodeled our lake home kitchen. They planned a kitchen with a center island, coffee bar and cabinets we would have never expected to have space for. It all turned out wonderful. They also helped us narrow down the many choices for countertop and backsplash paying attention to our budget. Chad, Rick and team are great communicators and work well together. We are so thankful to have had them do our remodel. They are a truly outstanding team who care about the customer as well as their work."

"Fabulous to work with and we love the end result!  Everyone we worked with was professional, prompt, personable, and very easy to work with.  Originally met Steve and Dani at the Home Improvement Show and then worked with Teresa, Scott, Alicia and Brian.  There were many others (plumber, heating, electric, drywall/ceiling, flooring and I'm sure I'm missing some in there) involved and again, all of them were great to work with and did excellent work.  There was no pressure to do anything we didn't want to do and Inspiration offered up suggestions along the way.  Brian was always there when he said he would be there, did fabulous work, kept us informed, and always left the place clean when he was done - thank you!  We were impressed with Inspiration from the start and our entire experience with them was great.  You may pay a little more to have the convenience of everything handled by one contractor and to have a designer work with you and the ability to pick out everything needed for the project in one place, but in our opinion it is WELL worth the investment and peace of mind that we got.  We spoke to other contractors who didn't have all of those items and frankly, didn't seem interested in us as the customer (like Inspiration did) - and we didn't want to end up with a horror story project gone wrong or delayed like you hear about.  We would gladly recommend Inspiration Design Center to others.  We have received many compliments on the "new" house and have told everyone who we used and that if they are thinking of remodeling, they should give them a call!

"I regret that I can't give Kitchen Renovators higher ratings. Darin Anderson is very personable and does excellent cabinet work. However, my project had a few bumps in the road. I've been slowly updating the galley kitchen in my 1950's era house. I had already replaced the floor, had a combination pantry/desk built, replaced the old water pipes throughout the house with copper, and then purchased a new sink, faucet and countertops. After checking Angie's list, I contacted Kitchen Renovators (Darin Anderson) to install the countertops, which Darin estimated would cost about $500. On September 30th, the date of the scheduled work, Darin called to say that he would be about 30 minutes late. When he arrived, he made a lot of suggestions for improving the usefulness of my kitchen, and showed me photos of his previous work -- all of which were impressive, but many were out of my price range. After consideration, though, I did decide to go ahead with having an existing lower cabinet removed so that the dishwasher could be shifted closer to the sink, having Darin build a new cabinet with two rollout shelves and one drawer, and having two existing small drawers replaced with one larger one. With this additional work, Darin quoted a price of $1500. I gave him a deposit and he did some preliminary work that day. He said he would build the new cabinet and drawer and would contact me in a few weeks about installation. A month later, since I hadn't heard from him, I called Darin about scheduling the rest of the work. We set the appointment for Thursday, November 18th, at 9:30 a.m. At 10:30 a.m. that day, I called Darin. He told me that he'd decided to work a home show at the last minute, and totally forgot our appointment. He offered to come over that same weekend, but I wasn't available. We agreed on Monday, December 6th, and I suggested I call him on Friday, the 3rd, to remind him (which I did). On Monday, Darin called to say that he'd be about 45 minutes late. As he was working that day, he stopped to answer quite a few cell phone calls, which set back the work schedule and ultimately delayed the plumber's work. Before leaving, Darin swept the floor but left sawdust in the drawers and cabinets. He hadn't given me a written estimate, and I specifically asked him for a receipt on 12/6, showing that I had paid in full. He didn't remember the actual numbers that he'd given me, so I looked up the amount of the check I had written for my deposit, and he rounded off numbers from there."

"There were some problems not related to quality of work. I told him what days i was not available. they chose one of those days and nobody informed me when they were coming. I had to call them to find out. they brought the wrong countertops. I told them but I agreed to keep them because i had chosen them first and then had changed them. I agreed to keep them but they owed me a small refund which took a while to com my way."

Countertops and Backsplashes questions, answered by experts

While Formica® countertops are scratch-resistant, they are not fully scratch-proof. They will develop marks on their upper decorative layer more easily than quartz, granite, or porcelain tile. Always use cutting boards for food prep and avoid dragging heavy items, such as blenders or big pots, across the surfaces.

There are many countertop options to consider instead of granite. Other natural stones include marble and quartz, or you could consider laminate countertops that mimic the look of granite for less. When choosing an alternative to granite, keep the durability and the cost of installing countertops in mind.

It is not recommended to put a hot pan directly on a marble countertop. While marble is heat-resistant, it is not completely heat-proof, and extreme or prolonged exposure to high heat can cause discoloration, cracking, or chipping. Pans may also scratch or nick the surface. To protect your countertop and maintain its integrity, always use trivets or hot pads. Note that faux marble finishes do not resist heat and require protection from hot items at all times.

Durable, contemporary concrete countertops can increase home values. However, they might not offer as high an ROI as quartz or granite surfaces, which offer a timeless aesthetic and durability likely to appeal to a range of home buyers. Installing new countertops is a home improvement that can yield an average of 60% to 80% ROI when done well, using quality, perennially popular materials.

Kitchen counters are 36 inches high because that’s considered the ideal height for the average American adult, which is 5’9” for men and 5’4” for women. A three-foot counter height lets most people comfortably chop, cook, and clean without straining their backs, necks, and shoulders.
