"Justin was absoultly great! He was punctual and responded to emails/messages quickly. Plus, the quality of his was is superior. He knew that we were on a time crunch with doing some work on our new home. Justin and the guy he had help in replaced all of our baseboards and window casings in one day! They also did a great job cleaning up. If you need an indoor carpenter guy, Justin is the man to go to."

Customers say: True professional

"I rank Landson Construction #1 in the list of contractors we have hired in our 40 years of home ownership. Ari and his team of subcontractors recently completed a challenging remodel of one of our bathrooms--challenging because it is a very small area with limited space. Their finished job looks better than our separate remodel of a larger bathroom completed by one of the big firms that advertises daily on television. Examples: the tile work in our small shower is exceptional, and the vanity/oversized sink is a perfect match that does not dominate the small room. Ari Erickson (no relation to me) offered selections from his preferred vendors, but we had full latitude to shop on our own for all tile and fixtures. He and his subcontractors kept us fully apprised at all stages of the project, arrived promptly throughout the course of the work, responded promptly to our texts and emails, and cleaned up their work area at the end of each day. My highest recommendation: I always seek at least four bids for a major project, but I would forego that process and hire Landson Construction again for future building/remodeling projects, and would encourage friends and family to do the same."

"Jared at Northland Construction was the lowest bid, but that's not why we hired him. He seemed very honest and knowledgeable about the project. They didn't use scaffolding like the others wanted to. The just used ladders. They arrived on time, did the work, and completed on time. At one point I went to ask a question and he apologized for his phone talking to him, which I didn't care about at all, but he was listening to a bible study podcast while he worked, which my wife and I thought was very cool. After the work was done, we asked if he could give us a price to fix a door that was not closing properly. He just fixed it and would not accept any payment for it. We tried to hand him a $100 bill, but he would not take it. Jared is a great contractor and a good man. We cannot recommend him highly enough and will definitely use him for any future projects."

"Bill was a true professional. He is a knowledgeable carpenter and also explains things well to the homeowner. Much of our work required him to work on a tall ladder, which other carpenters sometimes don't feel comfortable doing. He is also extremely neat, going above and beyond to pick up any debris at the job site and haul everything away in his truck. Other carpenters have put items in our own trash. Bill is reliable, honest, and takes time to do the job right. My husband and I highly recommend him and would definitely use him again for future projects."

Small jobs welcome

"Ross was not only diligent, capable, and did a great job with our painting project, but was also immensely kind and enjoyable to work with. He was flexible with my indecision around our project, pivoted to building us some wonderful garage storage at the end of his time with us, and is an all-around amazing person and handyman."

"I contacted TCH based on other reviews of them for larger projects here. My project was to build a brand new wall downstairs for my office/bedroom so I needed someone to do the framing, drywall, mudding and electrical. The wall was about 10' and my ceiling is low so they even had to cut the door and frame to fit. Many handymen don't provide all these services, I was told to find a GC. When I contacted TCH they were responsive from the start. I knew from researching them they did more of a bid than pure hourly rates which I really liked. Darren came out to the house to take a look and help me figure out where the wall should go. I didn't have much experience so it was great to have his expertise in picking out a door, specifications, all of that. They also took care of adding an air return which didn't even occur to me. They were super flexible on adding some fixes for my weird wiring and rerouted a switch to the inside of my office from the outside. John was the handyman who worked with me on the project and he was awesome. Very considerate and asked about design and pointed out issues as he worked. He cut the door to fit perfectly, reframed it, got all the matching trim I needed. I was so happy with the result, all I had to do was paint! They could have done that for me too. Overall I'm super pleased and will definitely be working with them in the future."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

A cross brace for a fence gate should stretch from the top corner of the gate’s hinge side to the bottom corner of its latch side at a 45-degree angle to the bottom of the gate. This positioning distributes the bulk of the gate’s weight to the base of the post, taking pressure off the top hinge.

If you remove a load-bearing wall to create an entrance to a carport or covered patio, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. Factors such as the type of addition and if that area needs additional work will add to the price.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

Removing a load-bearing wall is best handled by professionals. However, if you have the skill set and decide to DIY the project, you will still need at least one additional person to assist you. Aside from helping with demolition, you'll need another hand to install the new support beam.
