"There prompt friendly plumbers were very knowledgeable! As a bonus they left the area that they worked in cleaner than before they did the work. The amount of $$$ I saved hiring Pure Mechanical has me and my wife very thankful."

"I am blessed to have met David today. Thank you, Angie! David replaced a bath vanity faucet for me. He will be my “go to” plumber in the future! He is personable, quite knowledgeable, efficient, and his rates are competitive. Just by watching him, work, I could tell that he is worthy of his master plumber credentials. While he was here, he also flushed my hot water heater. Thanks for working that into your schedule today! I highly recommend David and his company, Nearby Plumbing based in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. nearbymnplumbing.com"

"Our sink pipes were leaking and previous plumber said probably due to back pressure related to blockage. Craig came out and was great to work with. Friendly, hard-working and explained everything. Would definitely hire again."

"Emergency sewer line repair done very quickly and without extensive front entry disruption….no digging up of the front grass or sidewalk, no removal of the porch and steps. Not an easy job, but they were able to dig underneath the porch stoop and fix a break of unknown cause. I was back in my house much sooner than expected and a very reasonable cost. All is working well again. I highly recommend.."

"In May of this year we had Great Lakes Home Renovations replace the aging shower stall in our upstairs bathroom. Despite scheduling challenges presented by COVID-19 and an incorrectly measured shower pan (which had to be re-ordered), we are pleased with the results. Ben and crew were very polite and respectful to our COVID-19 concerns and performed their jobs quite well. Whenever I had a question, Ben answered it thoroughly. He also sought our input when needed which I appreciate. Ben did a very good job finishing the project and left the worksite very clean."

"After various and outrageous quotes from local plumbing companies, I hired Yuriy and his crew to install a new Rinnai tankless water heating system at hour house. The project included the install of the new unit at a different location in the basement and the conversion/hookup to the main natural gas pipe which was feeding our furnace. We previously had an electric water heating tank system that lasted 23 years. The removal of the old tank was included as well. He also did about 12 feet of old galvanized pipe replacement with copper piping and various shut off valves, wall anchors and a hookup to an existing humidifier. The final price was fair and the work was done beautifully and on time. Any issues during the project (minor stuff) were tackled quickly and efficiently. It was really a very nice experience. Yuriy and his crew were very knowledgeable and highly professional! in the end, we were very happy with the result and we're enjoying our on-demand, very efficient"

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

While you shouldn’t increase the flow of your low-flow toilet by adjusting the water level in the toilet bowl set by the manufacturer, you can make the flow as efficient as possible by ensuring the rim jets under the rim are unobstructed. To do this, use a mirror to look under the rim and scrub them with a toothbrush or a small wire to clear any debris stuck in the holes. You can also watch for leaks, make sure the internal components are in good shape, and replace them if necessary.

Water pressure for residential homes falls between 40 and 60 pounds per square inch (PSI). This range works well for everyday water use in most households. And while some homes have water pressure higher than 60 psi, once the pressure reaches 80 psi or more, it can lead to increased wear and tear on your plumbing system.

You should check water pressure twice a year to ensure there aren’t any irregularities and that it isn’t too high. It’s also smart to check it any time you notice symptoms of high water pressure (like banging pipes, inconsistent water flow, and leaky fixtures). Similarly, if you live in an area that’s prone to water pressure fluctuations due to municipal supply changes, elevation, or seasonal temperature shifts, check it more frequently. You can buy an affordable water pressure gauge and check the water pressure yourself.

If a toilet is not properly vented, you could experience issues like poor drainage, slow flushing, frequent clogs, malfunctioning traps, gurgling noises, and the release of sewer gasses. If left untreated, all of these issues could lead to longer term structural damage or (in the case of sewer gasses) harmful health side effects.

Replacing cast iron pipes when they’ve reached the end of their life span is key to preventing leaks and clogs. Over time, cast iron pipes corrode and experience pipe scale, which thickens the inside of the walls and increases the chance of clogs while also decreasing water flow. As the material deteriorates, you could experience costly leaks that increase reparation expenses.

Cast iron can last between 50 and 75 years, but it’s still a good idea to check for leaks as your pipes approach the 25-year mark, as pipes can already show signs of deterioration within the first three decades.
