"Emergency sewer line repair done very quickly and without extensive front entry disruption….no digging up of the front grass or sidewalk, no removal of the porch and steps. Not an easy job, but they were able to dig underneath the porch stoop and fix a break of unknown cause. I was back in my house much sooner than expected and a very reasonable cost. All is working well again. I highly recommend.."

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

Keep pipe insulation sleeves and temperature-rated heat tape on hand to protect vulnerable pipes during freezing Andover winters. Stock a main water shutoff wrench to quickly stop flow in emergencies. Store extra water softener salt and descaling solutions to combat hard water buildup. Finally, keep a wet/dry vacuum and a backup sump pump ready to manage heavy spring snowmelt and prevent basement flooding.

Helpful?

New homes in MN require basic fixture adjustments and water softener setup. Between 15 and 30 years, hard water scaling destroys water heaters, and aging supply lines demand full replacement. Sump pump motors also fail during this period. For homes over 30 years old, expect extensive plumbing updates, including complete sewer line replacements and upgrades to corroded copper or galvanized steel supply lines.

Helpful?

Start by securing local permits through your municipal building department and hiring a licensed professional, as state code limits homeowner exemptions. Plan outdoor plumbing for late spring through early fall to avoid Andover's harsh winters. Check your trench depth for water lines, as frost reaches deep underground. Finally, account for hard water by planning for water softener integration and selecting durable pipe materials.

Helpful?

Choose cross-linked polyethylene for supply lines, as it resists freezing and hard water scaling better than rigid copper. Select schedule 40 PVC for drain, waste, and vent installations to meet state code requirements. For water service lines, install high-density polyethylene or heavy-duty copper to withstand deep frost depths across MN. Always use insulated covers for exterior sump discharge lines to prevent winter blockages.

Helpful?

In Andover, pipes in exterior walls, garages, and crawl spaces are highly vulnerable to freezing. Hard municipal water accelerates mineral buildup in water heaters, showerheads, and faucet aerators, requiring frequent maintenance. Sump pumps handle heavy spring snowmelt and demand regular testing. If your home was built between the 1980s and 2000s, aging supply lines will require replacement to prevent unexpected leaks.
