"Chris built a wardrobe closet, bedside bookcases, head board, bed frame with storage, dining nook bench, and a dining room table for me. Excellent work, prompt, cleaned up after every day. Super to work with and would highly recommend this professional!"

"My designer Michelle was very talented and drew up 2 very functional closets. My installers were neat, clean and very conscinous. Rico was especially polite and meticulous about his work. Andy, construction coordinator, was always courteous and organized. I love my closets. No complaints! Diane Bedore"

"It went EXTREMELY WELL!!! Warren was a lifesaver! He was very professional. He’s extremely creative and visionary. He redesigned, decluttered and organized my bedroom closet and every other closet in my house , including my basement! It was a very therapeutic process and it definitely took a weight off of my shoulders. My closets are well organized and I have been able to keep them that way because of his organizational skills and system he designed. I highly recommend him!"

"Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

"Chris - gave us a quote of 3 hours for $150. I met the two cleaners who were very friendly and punctual. They completed the work in only 2 hours and our house look fantastic. Dropped the price to $125, too. The female cleaner even went out of her way to change the shelving inside our fridge to make it more efficient..so much better! Can't say nicer things about the whole team and I highly recommend to everyone to use Beacon as your house cleaners!!

"Overall, we had a very good experience with Rob and Zach.  They were incredibly patient with our very challenging and large kitchen renovation ($65k total cost).  There were many design challenges to overcome for which they always found a creative solution. Rob and Zach run a very honest operation, including things that most contractors won't do, such as utilizing a Lowe's LAR account so that you can see exactly what you are paying for materials.  Payments for labor were done upon completion of work without pressure of deposits, etc.  Their pricing was definitely fair and better than other contractors that we had quote the job.  They were very prompt and very open/patient to our ideas and suggested ways to improve the design and functionality throughout the entire process.  We will definitely use Rob and Zach again in the future!

"They were prompt and sent out someone right away to hang the mirror. They determined I needed a special bracket and scheduled another date to come back and gave me a fixed price of around $225. It was a two person job, the first person showed up on time the second was about 3-4 hours behind. Still I was happy.
I decided to use them again. The second time I called the person who answered was again very prompt and called one of my tenants in a rental property and scheduled a time. I heard back a few days later it would be $350 to repair my stairs. I agreed. About a week later I get a call and the person said this is a bigger job than we thought it is going to be way more work than I originally thought. OK. Well I asked what it would cost... He said he wasn't sure the best way to handle it would be to do it hourly. I said I am concerned about how long you will be there this is a rental and I'd prefer a fixed price. They responded they cannot do that because they have no idea how long it will take. I said can you estimate, they said yes it shouldn't take more than 8 hours. I signed a contract agreeing to the fixed price per hour either $65 or $85 I can't remember. I received a bill for 20 hours and I called my tenant to verify the person was there that long and she stated yes, but he worked so slow I am not sure if he was doing anything half the time other than playing on his phone or was outside. I called and they said it is what it is for the most part. I hope ripping people off on hourly jobs puts you out of business. If you were honest you could of made a lot of $ off me for years as I have multiple properties. This is chump change to me so I didn't pursue it. If it would have been a bigger job I wouldn't of paid you. What happened to the honest people?

Closets questions, answered by experts

Whether it’s less expensive to build or buy a closet depends on both the type of closet and whether or not you’d be constructing it yourself. The cost of custom closets built by a pro ranges from $1,300 to $3,800, but you may be able to DIY it for as little as $400. By contrast, prefabricated options go as low as $200 and up to $3,000, so it’s almost always less expensive to go this route.

You may need a building permit to add a closet, depending on the size and kind of work required to install it. The most likely scenario requiring a permit involves changing the structure of the house and performing electrical work for closet lighting. A permit can cost between $100 and $450. If you’re installing a smaller reach-in closet, a permit may not be required, but always check with your local municipality and consult a closet designer or builder.

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

You can modernize an old-looking closet by just painting it, but beyond that, consider electric elements like recessed or accent lighting. If this is a large and deep closet, you can consider adding an island to the middle or a nice ottoman on a rug. Luxury closets will have even more items, like felt-lined drawers for watches and jewelry, in-wall safes, electronic shoe storage, or a tablet catalog of their items.

Yes, 12-inch shelves are often considered the standard closet shelf depth for storing folded clothing, shoes, and small containers. However, if you plan to store bulky items such as blankets, baskets, or cleaning supplies, you may want to go deeper. For specialized layouts, an adjustable system can give you more flexibility.
