"Dale came into our home to test our water. He provided a demonstration with great education along the way to help us understand what he was looking for and how RainSoft could help. We have city water and were shocked to learn that our existing single-unit RO system in the kitchen, which we have used for years, was not cleaning our water the way we were told it was. I often thought about the internal impacts of chlorinated water but did not recognize the negative effects that happen to our bodies on the outside as well when our water is not clean and yet full of chemicals. Dale was so thoughtful and knowledgeable. We were very thankful for the insight and the level of options offered to meet us wherever we were financially. We would highly recommend an evaluation to anyone who does not know with confidence what is in their water."

"Discovered water pouring from my 30+ year old water heater at 5:30am. Shut off water and did some preliminary cleanup before looking on line to see who to call. Noticed that Hedlund was open already at 6:30 so I called them and actually got to speak to someone (Tom, I think). He checked and said he could send a crew over about noon time which was fine. They actually called about 10:00 saying they could come right then if OK and they were here by 10:30. They looked over the situation and gave me an estimate which I thought was fine from the little bit I knew about water heaters. Also, the price included the cost of a city permit and they had to make the exhaust pipe that went into the chimney larger to meet code. Also, strangely enough the hot water faucet at the kitchen sink started dripping while they were turning water on/off to make sure it was running when it needed to be and not running when it wasn't supposed to be. And it just so happened that Hedlund had installed that faucet 2 years ago. I had the receipt for it and they determined that the packing nut needed to be replaced and they replaced it free of charge since it was only 2 years old. So with all that done, I thought the $1200 price was adequate."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

A good hardness level for drinking water can vary based on personal preferences, but an ideal level is 3.5 to 7 GPG. This means your water isn’t soft or hard. However, some people prefer the “fresh” taste from the minerals in hard water, while others like the smoother, “slippery” texture of soft water.

If your water softener repair is fairly straightforward, like a simple filter replacement, then you can probably do it yourself with little risk. However, anything beyond a simple fix should be addressed by someone with extensive plumbing expertise to avoid costly water softener problems, like leaks.

That said, even simple problems can be complicated to diagnose, particularly if your water softener is attached to a whole-house treatment system. So, unless you feel absolutely certain that the problem is an easy fix that you can take on yourself, it's probably best to hire a plumber to diagnose and fix the problem.

You should not use a water conditioner with a water softener because a water conditioner changes the chemistry of the water and causes the ion exchange in a softener to be ineffective. Choose a water softener if you have hard water or well water, and use a water conditioner if you need to remove certain contaminants.

The average cost to install a water softener, including the system and labor, is approximately $1,500. However, the total price can range widely from $600 to $6,000. For some complete systems, the cost may be between $800 and $2,500. Labor for the installation typically costs between $150 and $1,000.

The final price is influenced by several factors, including:

  • System type, capacity, and complexity

  • Home size and household water demands

  • Water hardness levels

  • Accessibility of the installation site and the extent of plumbing work required

  • Whether new electrical work is needed

  • The professional hired and any local permit costs

A tankless water heater should be at least 10 feet away from a water softener, although the pros you hire for water softener installation can help you determine the correct distance. These two units need to have some distance between them to prevent hot water from the tankless water heater from flowing backward into the water softener when it runs a regeneration cycle.
