You can drain a hot water heater yourself as long as you take some safety precautions. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the unit before starting, let the water in the tank cool down for a few hours, and wear safety equipment to protect yourself, including heavy-duty rubber gloves and safety goggles.

Boiling water helps unclog a drain, but usually only with a harder abrasive such as baking soda or vinegar. On its own, it isn’t the most effective tool. How much it will cost to install an earthquake shut-off valve depends on who’s doing the installation. The price of the earthquake shut-off valve itself can cost between $250 and $750, and you’ll pay between $150 and $200 for labor if you hire a licensed plumbing contractor. If you install the valve yourself, you’ll save on labor, but you might need to spend $50 to $300 on the right tools for the job (and it’s a complex job that we don’t recommend DIYing).

The P-trap (or S-trap in older homes) under your shower is designed to prevent sewer gas from coming back up, so you shouldn’t normally experience foul odors coming from your shower drain. If you do, the vent stack that introduces air into your plumbing system may be clogged, or you may have a more severe sewer main blockage. In either case, hire a plumber to fix the issue for you.

If your bathtub won’t drain, it’s usually due to a clog. You can try to remove any visible debris by hand. For debris stuck in the trap below the drain, a drain snake is your best bet. Keep in mind that chemical drain cleaners can be very effective for hair clogs, but they’re corrosive and can damage your pipes. Use with caution.
