"While it is normal for remodeling projects to create chaos and to be the muse of many a horror story, this ended up with a very pleasant end result. We had a complete renovation down to the studs to bring things up to code, which included ripping out the sub flooring and quite a bit of pipes. Parts were ordered and lost and found. Things went on backorder and were discontinued. We fortunately had a fantastic crew. Ismar (the contractor) did an awesome job of making sure that everything was done to spec and built beautifully. He followed our wishes and came back on the weekend and late to be sure the work was done right. The only real challenges were with the design and oversight from the office, between the designer losing our design specs on the first pass and not communicating proactively about delays or back orders, but thankfully these were more annoyance than problem. After a few handoffs, we got Eric E. as project manager, and he saw us through the rest of the project with much better results and only about 30% oversight still needed from us. Overall, we got a great bathroom out of the deal, so 4 stars."

"We have used LFC for several jobs. Tony, the owner, is really lovely, excellent with communication, and very honest about what they can and cannot do--to include realizing as he began a project that we needed some additional inspections to address some issues before we papered over them, something that cost him money but saved us a lot. That takes integrity. The quality of the repairs themselves have varied. They did a lot of drywall and post-plumbing-flood repairs that made the dining room truly look like nothing ever happened. They also did a fantastic job replacing one of our back doors to make it airtight. However, the painting took several tries to get right, and the second door still has a gap in the lower right hand side that lets air in. We have an old house that was cosmetically re-done before we bought it but never truly renovated, and whoever did the refurbishments did a shoddy job, so LFC certainly has had its work cut out for them. I do really appreciate how responsive and kind Tony is, and everyone who comes out to do repairs is very friendly. That is a rare quality in home services these days."

"We've had frequent water problems with the drain in the stairwell at the back of our house that enters into our basement. We'd finally had enough late last fall when water leaked into the basement and soaked into carpet in a couple of rooms. We called a couple of contractors to suggest fixes, and decided to go with City Renovations because we thought that they had an innovative solution to stop the leak. Mike Wiggs suggested replacing the French drain in the stairwell, patching eroded brick work in the retaining wall around the stairwell, and drilling holes into the wall to drain water building up behind it.
It was a bit frustrating at first, because the cold, wet weather last winter prevented Mike's team from doing the project. It was April before the weather was good enough to do it, but when Mike came to clear away debris after the project (I happened to be home), we looked at the work and he immediately said that it wasn't up to his quality standards, and that his crew had misunderstood his directions. On top of that, it rained that night and the drain didn't drain -- not the solution we were looking for!
MIke's team was back the following week and replaced the drain and concrete and did additional patching of the brick work. The result was like night and day. The drain and concrete work looked great, and the patched bricks looked terrific. Most important, when it rains now, the drain works and we're not concerned anymore about leaks into the basement.

"A leak sprung from the hot water heater tank located under the kitchen sink and beside the dishwasher. Because of how the plumbing was set up, turning off the water heater meant shutting off the water supply to the entire apartment. This happened in the December 2013 when temperatures were starting to chill down. The water heater was in a tight position, necessitating the removal of the dishwasher to access the hot water heater. This task was difficult enough so that our first plumber would not do the job without getting a second party to first remove the dishwasher and enable access through the cabinetry. Luis Vasquez was the second person I called and after assessing the problem, he was confident that he could handle the entire job and on short notice. Hence, I went with Luis and not the first plumber. Luis and his crew performed the work 4 days after the estimate. He also fixed the plumbing set up so that cold and hot water to the apartment could be independently shut off. Importantly, he was able to coordinate remotely with me as I was out of town when this leak happened. I found Luis to be professional and reliable and will definitely contact him again for future work.

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

You can stop a leak with plumber’s tape, but it’s not a recommended way to repair a leak. To install it, you have to dismantle the plumbing connection, apply plumber’s tape, and then re-install the pieces.

There are better options for a temporary fix for leaking pipes, such as repair sleeves, epoxy compounds, or pipe clamps.

A water softener is a worthwhile investment if you live in an area with hard water. While hard water is safe to drink, it contains minerals like calcium and magnesium that can cause significant problems over time. These minerals build up inside pipes, reducing water flow and eventually corroding the plumbing system, which can lead to leaks and a shortened lifespan. Hard water also damages fixtures and appliances, potentially resulting in costly repairs. Additionally, it makes soaps and detergents less effective, meaning you'll use more product to get things clean. By installing a water softener, you can prevent these issues. The initial investment is often recouped through long-term savings, including lower energy bills, reduced appliance and plumbing maintenance, and spending less on soap and cleaning supplies. Other benefits include cleaner linens, dishes, and clothing, as well as softer water that is gentler on your skin and hair. In some areas, a water softener can also increase your home's value, making it a valuable long-term investment.

While a leak may seem small, even a gentle trickle of consistent moisture can lead to mold problems in your bathroom. Make sure you know how to check for mold if your toilet has been leaking for a while. Pooling water by your toilet also poses a risk for someone slipping on the slick floor of your bathroom. Finally, a leak of any size can lead to water waste that increases your water bill.

There are several signs that can indicate you have air in your pipes, including unusual noises coming from the pipes, like banging and whistling, and inconsistent water flow and pressure. Spitting from the faucet right when you turn the water on is another indication that you might have air in the pipes.

Yes, a dripping faucet can increase your water bill. Leaking faucets use up more water than you’d think. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a faucet that drips once per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water per year. If you have more than one dripping faucet, your water bill can increase even further.
