"The workers that came to my home for the attic ladder installation were timely, professional, & courteous. They had the job done right, & in a timely manor. They are five star material all the way, & I would certainly hire them again for other home improvement needs. Thanks again JD Contractors for an excellent job!"

"This is a a top notch company. Needed a new roof on my house and shed as well as porch posts replaced. The owner, Daryl arrived and was extremely professional. Daryl had an estimate to me in minimal time. His estimate was broken down in an easy format that didn’t leave any questions as to where money was going. This estimate was lower than others that I had received , all while using better products that other contractors were going to use. Daryl was super accommodating with the time that the work was scheduled to be done. All materials that were needed arrived shortly before the work was to be done which makes things much easier to get the work done and drawing out the process with a contractor constantly having to leave to get materials. My family and I were away while this work was being done. Daryl ran into a few problems (25 year old roof) and kept me up to date as each one arose. Brackettry LLC os a top tier company and the owner is a top tier guy"

"Wayne and his team at Remodel Max were an absolute pleasure to work with when finishing off our basement. Wayne was involved from the very beginning and came out promptly to scope out the job and give an initial estimate. He took our considerations and visions for the space into account and helped translate those ideas into a fun and functional space for our house. They did a fantastic job from a workmanship standpoint. They were flexible and creative as we encountered additional challenges from issues the builders left us - they are committed to not just doing the job but doing it right. Lastly, Iâ d note that Wayne was BY FAR the best contractor weâ ve ever had in terms of communication. He frequently made site visits to check on progress and to relay what was going to be happening next. We were so satisfied with the basement project that we hired his team for our floors as well (another A+ experience). We would absolutely recommend Wayne and his team at Remodel Max. They are very fairly priced for the excellent service they provide and for the quality of service and communication you get from Wayne and his team."

"The repairman communicated with me about arrival time and was punctual. He completed most of the jobs on my list. He was unable to complete the soffit replacement, he indicated that type of work required a general contractor. All in all, I was satisfied."

"Kelvin Funes, owner of KF Remodeling is a very experienced contractor in all aspects of home building and remodeling. They have done four jobs for me this year from Feb to July of 2025. Jobs included; shower/bathroom, plumbing, electrical, drywall, and painting. Some were major plumbing and installation of wired smoke detectors. Not easy but Kelvin always tells me his job is to solve problems. And he does. Twice I needed to call him back to handle small over looked items and he returned promptly to handle them. Kelvin's knowledge, experience, and advice contributed greatly to the success of my projects, I am impressed and well pleased. Thank you KF Remodeling."

"Went wonderful with the contractor. They were great to work with and helped us navigate a very troublesome insurance company. They drove from northern Virginia to silver spring to do the work as well, not any easy task and a long commute in traffic. They were just great."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.

An A-frame home can be cheaper to build than a traditional house, but that is not always a given. Prices can be fairly similar in some cases, depending on the location, design, and necessary site preparation. Costs for an A-frame typically run between $100 to $200 per square foot, which is comparable to the cost of a traditional home. The cost of an A-frame can come in under those numbers if you opt for a prefabricated kit.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.
