"Jose and his crew installed a~360 sq. ft. patio using Nicolock pavers and contrasting charcoal border pavers in 2.5 days. Outstanding job. When I asked them about using edging to prevent the pavers from shifting, I was told that he does not use edging. Instead the perimeter is first installed as retaining wall blocks set in mortar! After the perimeter is set, the site is then excavated, compacted, covered with weed suppressing fabric. The fabric is then covered with crushed stone layer, compacted and sand is then laid on top, compacted and leveled and properly graded. I chose the herringbone design shown in their logo and very happy with the choice. The border pavers are laid on top of the retaining wall blocks and are "glued" to them using mortar/liquid cement. After the border pavers had set, the crew applied polymer sand to fill in the gaps between pavers. This "grouting" was done twice. The final product is solid as a rock and not going anywhere! VERY HAPPY WITH THEIR WORK. Jose Espinal's company is insured and bonded, so hire them for your project and be worry free."

"I am very pleased with my experience with JES and their repair of the foundation on my home. Rafael Garcia and Kevin Alfaro walked me through everything that was being done as the work progressed and showed me the what was done as they progressed. Along with Armando Aguilar, they were prompt and worked efficiently. I would recommend them to anyone with foundation concerns."

"Nick from blue crab home solutions came to the house and gave us a very reasonable estimate. He could not have been nicer. He kept us informed as to when the work would be done. The masons came and were equally nice and did beautiful work pointing our chimney and grinding and remortaring the bluestone patio. Superb work and in the end they cleaned up so you couldn’t tell they were here. An excellent all around experience from start to end . 5 stars Laddie Ross"

"BWN was very professional.  Steve Taylor visited our house and gave us an estimate for several different kinds of work, along with what would probably be the best for our situation.
Since our basement already has an existing drain system and sump pump, we opted to have BWN open up a small section of the floor, install wallboard and drain tile, and redo the concrete.  This way water from the leaking wall will flow into the drain system which already exists.
Since our sump pump was of indeterminate age (we moved into the house 1.5 years ago and the previous owner could not recall how long ago the original basement waterproofing was done) we chose to have that replaced as well.
Evan arrived at our house to do the work just about on time and worked hard.  Our floor section was not easy to open up (hard concrete under a low staircase and landing).  He was completely finished with the job, including applying the new layer of concrete before 3PM.  He took care to level the new layer of concrete as flush with the old layer as possible in the section where we will need to put tile down so that the tile floor will still be level.

Masonry questions, answered by experts

No, you don’t need to soak the brick before cutting it by hand. In fact, cutting a wet brick can make it harder to see your score lines and may cause the chisel to slip. Soaking is sometimes used with power tools to reduce dust, but for hand-cutting, it’s best to work with dry bricks for better control and visibility.

Do not use super glue to hang lights on brick unless you want your lights up year-round. Hot glue is a better choice because it’s easily removable with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Super glue is very hard to remove, and you could tear off parts of the brick in the removal process.

While painting can certainly change the look of a chimney, you should think twice about giving your brick chimney the old landlord special.

Painting brick is porous, meaning it’s full of tiny holes that can soak up moisture. Those holes also allow it to dry, though. So, when you paint it, you trap any moisture inside, providing an opportunity for mold, mildew, and water damage.

Paint also shows wear faster than naked brick. This means that once you paint a brick surface, you’ll have to keep painting it to maintain a clean look. A paint job is also harder to undo on brick because of its porous nature. Once you paint it, it’s hard to go back without some serious power washing—another added cost.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

The material you use depends on how hard-wearing your steps need to be and what you want them to look like. The most common stone for exterior steps is bluestone. It’s hard-wearing and durable, and bluestone steps cost between $15 and $30 per linear foot. Limestone is also a popular option and is mid-range, costing $25 to $50 per linear foot. You should always consider the specific requirements of your project before ordering any materials.
