"Within a day or two of our inquiry, owner/manager Kyle Hodges was here to evaluate our problem and give an estimate for the work he discussed with us. Although we live in a townhouse, the record-breaking Maryland rainfall and the slant of the front lawn toward our foundation had caused serious water build up at our foundation and threat to overflow into the basement.. For several weeks we had been bailing rainwater round the clock from the trench that had formed at the front of our home and using dozens of paper towel rolls to absorb water. Kyle saw the seriousness of the problem, brought his co-worker Matt who would do the work to help plan their project and scheduled a date. Matt was excellent and very thorough. So far the work they did has solved the problem successfully, and we look forward to their return in the spring for more corrective landscaping. We recommend Azaleas To Zinnias most highly and appreciate Angie's List for helping us find such a conscientious, competent, and professional business."

"On my shared driveway I noticed the concrete culvert was beginning to erode and shift. The crew came when scheduled to repair the culvert. The drainage area needed to be reshaped and have stone added to help with erosion issues. A cement footing was created to help hold up the concrete tubes and than concrete was packed in around the tubes help hold them in place. The job took several days to complete. I am very satisfied with the overall work. There was a lot of work put in to make the finished job look good and it does look good. I am giving a B for quality because the trucks they parked on my yard left large ruts in my yard. I watched the workers kick leaves over the ruts to hide them. When I complained they sent some one back to fix the ruts. That some one came back and with his foot kicked the top of ruts off, jumped back in the truck and left. I still have ruts that I will fix with my shovel and rake in spring. Such a shame. I will defiantly use them again in the future."

"Great experience from start to finish. My appointment was with Carlos who also provided my quotation. Unlike his competitors he came prepared with material samples along with pictures of previous projects. It was clear Carlos had a background in structural engineering as he was able to answer all my questions pertaining to anything structural. I received my proposal the same day of my appointment which others took weeks. It included firm pricing for permits which others only provided a range of cost. The job was well managed with keeping their workers on task and managing material deliverers along with keeping me up to date on job statis. Their workers are true craftsmen as their attention to details clearly shows. My wife and I couldn’t be happier with the deck they constructed along with our experience with this company."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

In Catonsville, homes with original brickwork, stone foundations, or Tudor and Colonial Revival architecture often benefit from masonry work. Signs like stair-step cracks, crumbling mortar, or efflorescence on basement walls are common due to the area’s clay-rich soil and older construction. Persistent dampness, bowing walls, or visible brick deterioration also indicate the need for brick restoration or repointing to maintain structural integrity.

Helpful?

In Catonsville, most masonry work is scheduled from late spring through early fall, when temperatures remain above 40°F and humidity is moderate. This climate window ensures proper mortar curing and reduces risks of damage from freeze-thaw cycles. Contractors often prioritize projects in May, June, and September, as these months offer optimal conditions for brick restoration, chimney repair, and foundation work, so booking early is recommended.

Helpful?

In Catonsville, unexpected costs can arise from addressing hidden water damage behind brick facades, extra labor for matching historic brickwork, or installing improved drainage to combat the region’s heavy clay soil. Homes in historic districts may require special approvals, and older properties sometimes need lead paint or asbestos mitigation. Uncovering structural issues or outdated utility lines during repairs can also extend project timelines and complexity.

Helpful?

In Catonsville, homeowners sometimes select contractors unfamiliar with the area’s historic masonry styles, leading to mismatched repairs. Using modern mortar on older brick can cause damage, especially in pre-1940s homes. Skipping drainage improvements in clay-heavy soil often results in moisture issues. Failing to secure necessary permits or ignoring local preservation guidelines can delay projects, while DIY repairs on complex structures may worsen existing problems.

Helpful?

In Catonsville, minor masonry projects like step repointing or small brick repairs typically take one to three days. Medium jobs, such as chimney repair or patio installation, usually last one to two weeks. Larger projects, including full foundation repairs or extensive brick restoration, may require two to six weeks. Delays can occur due to weather, permit processing, or sourcing period-appropriate materials, especially during peak seasons.
