"Pro Lawn is a knowledgeable, hardworking, and pleasant landscaper to work with. I cannot imagine working with anyone else. The work they did and the wonderful way in which it was done has made the company my number one. The staff was hardworking and polite. The foreman kept everything on track. The stonemasons were terrific. The plants and trees were first rate."

"The foreman, Roberto and his crew, Alun and Jose did an excellent job installing push piers to stabilize our foundation. They did a super job of resolving an unexpected problem that was encountered with a footer under a slab portion of the foundation. These men are a valuable asset to your company."

"We couldn’t be happier with our experience with Basement Systems USA. After they installed our system, they came out for a follow up inspections and identified a way to improve up it, which they did for free! Mike and Tyler did a great job making sure our system was system was set up properly and took the time to thoroughly explain what they were doing and why. Highly recommend them!"

"We had basement water issues with water and some mold and rotting wood that was compounded by Hurricane Sandy that led us to finally do the work.  I was fearful of being taken advantage of.   This company was recommended by a contractor that we use regularly and that we trust (Roger Williams Construction, Jarretsville).
The sales representative was easy to schedule.  He was one of the most experienced men in the company.  He reviewed our property and made a specific plan to handle the problems found.  This is not a cheap proposition, especially for something that is buried in the ground or behind walls, but something we wanted done once and finally.
The work comes with a lifetime warranty and is transferable to the next home owner.  The business has been around for over 20 years.  The warranty will last as long as the company lasts.
A big plus, but only mentioned in passing, was the company offered a 10% discount to Angie's List members.  I immediately became a member while we were discussing the proposal and immediately saved over $1000!!
One man prepped the basement and sidewalls.  Very capable and friendly.  Took several days.
A 3-4 man crew with a supervisor always on site then did the pipe, drain, and sump pump renovations and bentonite.  Took 3 days with the crew working from about 8:30 -3:30 each day.  Finished on time with as little mess as anticipated.  Project did require jackhammering cement around the basement edge and this did raise up some dust.
Same one man will return to refinish the sheet rock and reinstall cabinets and appliances.
Will probably need to pay to have a cleaning service come in and clean the basement and main floor to get the dust out.  Will need to pay to repaint the repaired drywall.  The carpet that was pulled away for the work does not appear damaged so hopefully it will reinstalled with little problem.

"The walls of the outside stairwell are beautiful, even though it's cinder block! An additional layer of cinder block was suggested so that water doesn't go into the stairwell. Drainage and a reservoir was added to move the water away from the stairwell. We will see once a long, hard rain comes if the basement will flood. The folks at Outdoor Advantage were very nice and knowledgeable!"

"I could not have been more impressed with my experience with this company. Our interface over the phone was great and the onsite service provided by Jason Ruffner was par excellence. We asked AA Action Waterproofing to come by and inspect for a possible leak in our foundation. Jason drove for a good 40 minutes to get here and determined that waterproofing work on the foundation wasn't necessary, and in fact our problem was tied to drainage above ground. Here's the thing that blew me away. Once Jason advised that his services weren't required, he still took the time to thoughtfully walk my property and offer advice on above ground drainage. We did have water coming in at the base of our foundation and a less scrupulous company could have easily convinced us that expensive sealing work was required. Instead, Jason pointed us in the direction of runoff remediation---and did so without even charging us. I was embarrassed about the amount of time he spent without and opportunity to be paid for his services and offered compensation, but he politely declined. These folks are professional, punctual, square with you, honest, and above exemplary. I generally don't bother to provide online reviews or answer surveys but this was one instance that demanded it. If you need foundation work done, you won't have to call anyone else. They're great."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

You will repoint over a fraction of the old mortar, but you should scrape away 1/2 to 1 inch of mortar from the joints before repointing. Otherwise, the repointing is only masking the weakened mortar instead of actually replacing it, which could put your chimney at risk of bigger, more expensive damages later on.

A fireplace is, by definition, an enclosed space where you burn wood or other fuel for the purpose of generating light and heat. A firepit burns wood and is much less expensive to build, but they aren’t technically a fireplace as it isn’t enclosed. An outdoor oven—commonly outdoor brick pizza ovens—often uses wood as fuel, but its primary purpose is to cook food, and you’d rarely just burn wood inside them for warmth or aesthetic reasons.

No, you shouldn’t lay bricks directly on dirt. While it might seem like a shortcut, it leads to a patio that shifts, sinks, and becomes a maintenance headache. Dirt expands, contracts, and erodes—none of which mix well with long-term stability. To build something that lasts, excavate the topsoil, compact a layer of crushed gravel, and add a coarse sand-setting bed. This layered base gives your bricks proper support, allows drainage, and helps block weeds from creeping through. Cutting corners here just means you’ll spend more time—and money—repairing your brick patio later.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

In most cases, painting your brick house is a fine idea that can open up new aesthetic possibilities. However, the paint can slightly shorten the life span of brick, especially if moisture gets trapped underneath the paint layer. Once you paint, you’ll have to keep up with maintenance to avoid flaking and blisters.
