"The installation took place on December 1st and went really smoothly. The two gentlemen, RJ and Sam, who did the installation were very professional and efficient. They completed the job in record time and made sure that the area was spotless when they left. I would definitely recommend Clean Air Mechanical, the owner, Jon, was very accommodating and friendly. If I had any complaint at all it would be that this furnace is considerably louder than my old furnace, but that has nothing to do with the folks who did the installation. Thank you CAM, Job well done! Doug Young Belchertown, MA"

"Mark was present throughout the job, working with his crew. They took care of every stage of the installation, including the plumbing in of gas lines. Mark went the extra mile when he felt that the return was too noisy using the existing one and installed three extra returns in order to cut down on noise. The units are super efficient and are actually saving us money. The system was expertly installed and we have had no problems with it at all. Highly recommended."

Install Boiler questions, answered by experts

A common HVAC rule is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of living space, you need 1 ton of heating or cooling capacity. Now that you know this common rule, you also need to know that it isn’t very accurate, and a dedicated pro wouldn’t use it for your home. If you talk to a pro who won’t or can’t perform a proper Manual J calculation, consider hiring someone more thorough.

Heat pumps are significantly more efficient than boilers, typically providing three to four times the amount of heat for the electricity they consume. While boilers run on fossil fuels, heat pumps use only electricity. This efficiency can lead to long-term savings on operating and maintenance costs. However, heat pumps have a higher upfront installation price compared to boilers. Despite their lower efficiency, boilers remain a popular choice for many homeowners, with 8 million in the United States alone, due to their lower initial cost and less intensive installation process. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your home's infrastructure, your budget, and your personal heating priorities.

The absence of heating or hot water, unusual noises like banging or gurgling, and visible water leakage are key signs. Abnormal boiler pressure, flame irregularities (for gas boilers), or pilot light issues may also signal trouble. Frequent cycling, soot or staining, and unusual odors, particularly gas-like smells, should not be ignored. Modern boilers often display error codes or lockout mode upon detecting issues. Uneven heating across radiators and rising energy bills without increased usage can further point to problems. Prompt attention to these signs is essential to prevent further damage and ensure safety.

Deciding whether or not to replace radiators with a different heating system depends on your personal preferences. Radiators can take longer to heat up than a central heating system, and they take up floor space. However, they can be very efficient at heating, and they keep rooms at a more comfortable humidity level in the winter than forced-air systems.

If you hear your radiator clanking even when it’s turned off, it’s typically because there’s trapped water or air in the system, causing a pressure buildup. When you hear significant clanking, popping, crackling, or banging in a radiator that’s turned off, you’ll want to bleed the pipes or call in an HVAC specialist to deal with the problem (and prevent it from happening in the future).
