"HARP sent a rep to the house, he did the evaluation for sizing, which was in line with the sizing tools I used. The solution he offered was just about what I had picked out, and I went with his recommendation. The install went fine. They did have to be reminded to retape some ducts, but we're happy to take care of it."

"great. Jesse was super smart, friendly, conscientious and knowledgable. he spotted a few things the previous tech didnt (including inefficiencies which were likely costing us money in propane costs). our boiler was super dirty and he got it looking and working as good as new (better actually as it wasn't set up correctly by the original home owner!). he put our mind at ease with his clear articulate explanation of what was needed and how he solved the problem. hopefully we get jesse again for next year's service. looking forward to a warm, cozy, efficient home this winter. thank you Jesse and Beacon!"

Install Boiler questions, answered by experts

The best time of year to purchase or replace an HVAC system, including components like an air conditioner or furnace, is during the off-season—spring and fall. During these periods, HVAC professionals are less busy than in summer and winter, when extreme temperatures create urgent demand. Shopping during the off-season can lead to savings of 10% to 15% on an AC unit and allows you more time to find the best deal and other cost-saving incentives. Typically, air conditioning units go on sale in the fall after demand drops, while furnace prices tend to decrease in the spring.

The right type of HVAC system will depend on several factors, including your climate, budget, preferences, and existing HVAC setup. For example, if you live in an area that experiences extreme weather, then a split system would likely be the best option. Or, if budget is a concern, consider installing a ductless system in just one room.

A furnace is a big unit where gas, heating oil, or electricity heats the air. The warmed air is then pushed back out through ducts and vents.

A boiler uses electricity, heating oil, or gas to heat water that is pushed into the room through a radiator. This is one of the oldest and most effective ways to heat a house, but radiators can also be unsightly and leave hot and cold spots in the room.

Heat pumps use a refrigerant to move heat from outside into the house and return it to the room through ducts and vents.

Generally, an oil furnace is considered safer than a gas furnace for several reasons. While both types of furnaces can produce carbon monoxide, a leak in an oil furnace is easier to detect due to the smell. Oil furnaces also don't connect to a gas pipeline, which reduces the chance of a fuel leak. Most importantly, heating oil is not combustible, whereas natural gas is highly flammable. This means there is a much lower risk of combustion or explosion with an oil furnace. However, an oil furnace can still pose a fire hazard if it tips over.

Costs range from $3,000 to $7,500, depending on system size and efficiency.
