"Jerry worked with me to design and install front and backyard gardens with a beautiful stone patio and stone paths. His work is excellent and he knows his materials. He checked in with me along the way about decisions that needed to be made, even though that part was a bit stressful. I also appreciated his team because they were friendly and worked well together (and strong to deal with super rocky soil). We love walking the gardens several times a day and neighbors often stop to admire the beauty of the flowers and trees. We highly recommend Stonewall Pro."

"Rodolfo and his crew were great to work with, and his crew and associates did a fine job on our upstairs rental apt. Work included insulation, new windows on the sunporch, repairs of water damage in the bathroom, painting of the entire apt (colors chosen by Rodolfo - the place looks great!), and other work as needed. We are glad we found Pro Performance Construction to do the job!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

It takes one hour to dig a 10-foot trench by hand. Use a trenching shovel with a sharp tip and a long head. Plan for more time if your soil is heavy or rocky. Consider renting a trencher if you’re digging a long or deep trench or if you have challenging soil or terrain.

There is no standard depth for burying a septic tank; they are typically buried anywhere from 4 inches to 4 feet underground. The final depth depends on several factors, including the depth of your main sewer line, the height of the bedrock, soil type, local regulations, and the property's landscape. If you plan to grow grass or plants over the tank, a depth of at least 4 to 6 inches is recommended. Deeper tanks can be more difficult to locate, but a septic professional can help find it for you.

The best method for digging a trench depends on the scope of the project. For a short, shallow trench (less than 2 feet deep) in light, soft soil, digging by hand may be sufficient. However, digging by hand is labor-intensive, so consider the effort required. A machine trencher is the better option for longer trenches (over 100 feet), deeper ones, or when dealing with difficult soil conditions, such as rocky or hard ground, or obstructions like tree roots. A machine can save significant time and energy in these situations.

The easier way to find buried sprinkler lines is to use the plan from the professionals who installed the system. If you don’t have professional plans, listen for running water on your lawn when you turn on the system. You may also spot wet areas, giving you an idea of where the heads are. Once you find the sprinkler heads, you’ll likely be able to connect the dots between them, revealing the system below.

Yes, you can technically make a crawl space liveable, but the only way to do so is by converting it into a basement. While some crawl spaces are big enough to walk through and store large items, they lack appropriate insulation and space to be liveable.
