"I had an excellent experience with Sean Farrell Excavation when they replaced my water pipe. From start to finish, the team was incredibly professional—fast, efficient, and clearly knew exactly what they were doing. They completed the job without any issues, and what really stood out was how clean they left everything afterward. They were also genuinely kind and respectful of my property, which made a stressful repair feel easy and worry-free. It’s not always easy to find contractors you can trust, but this is definitely one I’d recommend without hesitation."

Customers say: Quality work

"Barry was very responsive, and contacted me very quickly. He came to my home the next day to assess the work that needed to be done (repairing lots of cracks in my stone retaining wall) and was able to do the work within a few days. He and his workers did a great job, and IMO provided great value. Barry is very knowledgeable, having been in the business for around 30 years. Iâ d definitely hire Barry and his crew again."

"The owner needs to give more specific directions to his crew. The job was to trim hedges. Instead my raspberry bushes were chopped down right before berries were ready. The roses that were covering an arbor were completely chopped down leaving the arbor bare. The cost of moving raspberries to this spot included bringing in stones (done a year ago- cost $700) I don’t know if raspberries will come back. What a waste! The cost was low for the work by M & G but supervision was needed."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

A walk-behind trencher can cut through roots as long as they’re not too thick, making a project much easier than digging with a shovel and other hand tools. Assess your terrain and the number of trees in the surrounding area to determine if a walk-behind trencher will ease the job. Digging a trench by hand is much more time-consuming and labor-intensive.

Yes, trenchers can go through gravel. Gravel is made up of smaller, softer rocks that certain trenchers are able to cut through. Just be sure to use a rock wheel trencher or chain trencher, both of which are made to cut through rocky landscapes and gravel pathways without dulling the teeth or chain.

Digging a well can cost between $20 and $25,000, depending on your needs. If you’re looking to dig a well yourself, all you need is a shovel. If you’re looking to have a well drilled by a professional, you can expect to pay around $15 to $30 per foot. The total cost of drilling a well will average to $5,500.

Some two-in-one tools and machines do both jobs, and those could be the right solution for smaller residential projects. However, the phrase “use the right tool for the job” definitely applies to digging. For the best results, get two separate tools for your trenching and landscape edging projects or call a pro to take care of everything for you.

Prior to excavation, you should prepare the dig site and call 311 before you sign anything.

To get your site ready for excavation, you should move anything in the area that isn’t affixed to the land. You can save money on the excavation by removing hardscaping, including walkways, decks, concrete patios, and paver patios.

Before you carry out any digging, you should call 311 to confirm that there are no utility lines running through your excavation site. Skipping this step could lead to severe injury and property damage if your excavator hits a water, sewage, or gas line.
