Short circuits can cause fires, electrical burns, and electrocution, which can lead to serious injury or even death. That’s why it’s important to take preventative measures to prevent short circuits, like getting annual electrical maintenance and an electrical inspection every two to five years, depending on the age of your home.

Most new homes have coax outlets in every room. A home can require anywhere from one to five outlets based on how many rooms require internet, cable, or satellite access. If you want to mount your TV on a wall as part of a home renovation, consider installing a new outlet to avoid the need for a splitter or long cable that could slow down speeds.

Motion sensors are actually an eco-friendly option and don’t use as much electricity compared to other lighting sources. Motion sensor lights are always on “standby,” which requires a phantom source of power at all times, but for most sensor light models, this is only a small amount of electricity—typically around one watt of power.

The most common type of electrical outlet is a 3-prong outlet, which has two flat blades (one is wider than the other) and a round grounding pin. Older homes typically have 2-prong outlets that aren’t as safe as more modern options and are generally not up to current electrical codes.  Other outlets you can find in your home include 20A, 125 volt varieties for larger appliances like refrigerators or washing machines. 

There are also GFCI outlets, which protect against electrical shock in wet areas, such as bathrooms and kitchens, and arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) outlets, which protect against electrical fires caused by arcing.
