"We have used Painting Innovations for a number of projects over the years at two different homes, and they always do outstanding work! Our most recent project was the exterior painting of our home along with staining of our deck and pergola. Everything went great from start to finish! David, who is one of the owners, is amazing to work with and communicated with us frequently through project completion. William led the team who did the work, and he was also awesome to work with - friendly, professional and very detail oriented. The crew took a lot of care with the prep, painting and staining, and the end result is beautiful. We will continue to use Painting Innovations for all of our exterior and interior painting needs."

"In a word - OUTSTANDING! Christopher Wilson and his entire crew did a terrific job painting the exterior of our home and staining our decks. We also had a significant amount of wood rot that need to be repaired. The carpentry and craftsmanship was top-notch as they mitigated the wood rot. The entire crew worked hard, were responsive and kept a clean job site. I would hire Christopher Wilson and his company again without reservation."

"Kevin and his crew were very efficient. He came by and left stain colors as well as the estimate for work even though I was not able to be home to meet him. In order to do the job well he trimmed some bushes surrounding my deck and got rid of the yard waste. As the crew worked, he sent me pictures of the process and put the deck furniture back where it had been. The entire process was professional and immaculate. I definitely recommend Kevin Turner Painting! "

"They did an excellent job painting the exterior of our home. They were always on time, did more than promised and were able to finish in four days. I will definitely call them when I get ready to paint the inside of my home. Dan was great to work with assuring everything was just what we wanted."

"Pro Home Exteriors did a wonderful job installing my vinyl siding, painting my foundation and staining my porch and deck. Juan and his crews were very professional and explained everything they were doing. My house is beautiful and they stayed on schedule. The clean up after completing the project was great and I am completely satisfied with this project. I highly recommend Pro Home Exteriors for your next vinyl siding or painting project. My deck looks brand new and is much sturdier than even when it was first built. I’ll hire this company again for my next project. Thanks Juan- appreciate the attention to detail and hard work from you snd your crews!"

"Ken Turner and his crew were very nice and punctual. They did a good job with staining our deck. A couple minor edges missed, but overall good job. My dissatisfaction lies in the cost. I had purchased 2 Angies List coupons. 1 for Exterior Painting $399 for $800 worth of work and 1 for Interior Painting $199 for $400 worth of work. Ken never provided me a solid estimate for the job. Plus, I purchased the coupons prior to getting an estimate from Ken thinking the $800 coupon would surely cover the job, but it didn't. Power wash was not included in the job. We didn't have the time to do it, so Ken's men did it for $200. We had to purchase the stain for $250. When we found out the job would be more than what the exterior coupon was worth, Ken let me apply the interior coupon, which I was hoping to use for painting my kids rooms. So for a total of $1,650 our deck was stained. We also had to provide and place the plastic drop cloth under the deck. We have a large deck, but I never would have imagined it would cost that much. Total man hours came to approximately 10. I highly recommend Angie's List members make sure they get estimates for work PRIOR to purchasing Deals!! I also requested an invoice for work completed for our records several times from Ken and never received anything in writing. In addition, this is the second company I heard mention that they had to pay a 30% fee to Angies List for coupon Deals!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Hiring a contractor or professional deck refinisher is the best way to ensure your deck is properly stained. They have the expertise, tools, and supplies to do the job quickly and efficiently. However, staining a deck is a manageable task for most homeowners, and doing the job yourself can save money. Just keep in mind that DIY staining is a long process requiring physical strain, so it may not be the best option for everyone.

Whether to brush or roll stain on wood depends on the project and your preference. Brushing is ideal for smaller, intricate areas and offers more control over the application, ensuring thorough coverage and penetration into the wood's grain.

Conversely, rolling is efficient for more extensive, flat surfaces and can save time. However, it is not always the best fit for textured or uneven wood. Some projects may benefit from combining both methods, using a brush for detail work and a roller for broader areas. Ultimately, the choice between brushing and rolling depends on the specific requirements of your staining project.

A properly applied coat of stain will last between 3 and 8 years, depending on your climate. If you live in a place where your fence experiences a lot of moisture or high heat, your stain will last for a shorter period than in more temperate conditions. We recommend reapplying stain every 3 to 5 years to keep your wood in good condition.

You’ll need to restrain your deck when you notice fading, cracking, peeling, or mold and mildew over a moderate to large area, or when it’s become especially difficult to clean. As for how often to stain a deck, plan to do it every two to three years or whenever you start to notice extended damage.

There’s no single paint that’s the most waterproof. Instead, there are several types of waterproof and water-resistant paints that suit different purposes. Epoxy paint, for instance, is commonly used to provide a waterproof coating to floors and decks. Masonry paint is an excellent choice for exterior walls. Meanwhile, there are waterproof acrylic paints that can be used for interior and exterior walls. It’s more about choosing the best type for what you’re painting instead of the most waterproof paint overall.
