"Did not have a good experience with Lowes flooring installation. They contract out the installation and our installation group did not have supervision and did not properly install plastic barriers to minimize dust impact of demo dust from pulling up old floor. We expected some dust but we ended up with a layer of heavy dust throughout our entire first floor. We had to bring in a cleaning crew the next day to simply get back to baseline and Lowes customer service was marginal at best. Would never contract with Lowes again for this type of project. Disappointing."

"Earl Grey & Sons did the plumbing on my new home built in 2015. I’ve been having issues with the whole upstairs backing up into the bathtubs and showers and toilets with raw sewage and had another company come out for inspection. after they snaked lines, removed a toilet, and went through with a camera they found that the plumbing wasn’t installed correctly. It wasn’t angled down enough for things to flow all the way down to the main line and over time, it caused a bunch of gunk to build up in the pipes. When I called Earl Grey & Sons to ask them to repair their mistake, they told me that they couldn’t have done that, because ‘the house wouldn’t have passed inspection if that were true’, and then they hung up. Clearly it is true, because I am now having to pay over $3,000 to replace all of my upstairs plumbing. Then I will have to pay someone else to come in and repair the huge holes being cut into my living room and guest room ceilings to access the pipes. Any business who outright refuses to acknowledge the possibility of making a mistake is shady, if you ask me. People make mistakes, and when we have professionals stating that this is the problem along with video footage showing it, they are clearly just trying to cover their own behinds and not have to do any work for free...even though they should! They’re fully to blame. Do not use them if you want quality work that they stand behind!"

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

No. You should never directly drain a water softener into a sewer cleanout. This practice is illegal in many areas because it could allow raw sewage to get into your drinking water and make you seriously ill. Many places have codes requiring a specific seal, pipe, and a large air gap between a water softener and a sewage cleanout. Check out Florida's Plumbing Building Code as an example of what these restrictions might look like.

You can use a commercial water repellent treatment for glass on your shower doors to prevent water spots. Take care to only apply the product to glass. Letting air circulate also helps prevent water spots, as water is less likely to remain on the glass for a long time with good air circulation. Run your vent fan, open a window, and leave the shower door open for about half an hour after using the shower.

A water softener removes minerals from your drinking water and can make your house water softer. These softeners are designed to extend the lifetime of your plumbing system while also making water safer and more palatable for drinking. Hard water, which is water with a heavy amount of suspended particles, can also cause hair damage, skin irritation, and buildup in your pipes.

While not everyone can detect taste differences in high-calcium water, water that has a slightly metallic taste probably has too much calcium.

Routine maintenance involves recharging the resin bed with salt or potassium, cleaning components, and periodic inspection.
