"I was helping a friend move the past two weeks. Her realtor had recommended that she call 1-800-Got-Junk. She had them out to haul away trash, which they did on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. All the employees were pleasant, efficient, and professional. The employees were Pete Stuart, Gage Moss, TJ (Tommy Jones), John Morris, and Layke. On Tuesday, the last day to haul away trash, she was suddenly left without a mover after the mover took one load, then quit! Got-Junk was there when she got the call on Tuesday, and Pete Stuart coordinated one truck to finish the trash and called for another truck to move remaining home items to storage. John and TJ then put home items into storage. They put one area under a tarp for us to move or to call back if we wanted Pete to move. We called back. The next day, Wednesday, we asked for Pete to move the remaining items from under the tarp into the truck, which Pete and Gage did in less than 15 minutes! The new homeowner was really impressed and asked for a card from Pete and asked about pricing, etc. I am so thankful that Pete was able to coordinate the move to storage! He was a God-send! And all went quickly, taking less than one hour from start to finish on Wednesday. I am definitely recommending 1-800-Got-Junk on nextdoor.com on the west side near Eagle Creek and Angies List! This is an honest, up-front company with great employees with a heart of service!"

Generally speaking, it’s absolutely worth it to repair a garbage disposal, so long as it’s eight years old or younger. Once you pass that eight-year threshold, it depends on the issue. If it’s a simple jam and the core components remain unaffected, call a local plumber for a quick repair. If it seems like the motor is wearing down, spring for a replacement unit. 

Garbage disposals last an average of seven years but can function well past 10 years. However, as time goes on and more food is ground, the grinding plates will slowly lose their edge and need replacing. A motor likely won’t last 10 or more years, but you should be able to get a minimum of five years at least, even under heavy usage. 

Garbage disposals are durable appliances that usually last at least eight years as long as you clean and maintain them. It’s relatively rare for a garbage disposal to break on its own, as most malfunctions happen due to user errors, like overstuffing the grinding compartment or damaging the blades by trying to dispose of metal or bone. Eventually, cracks or leaks could develop in the unit, which requires a full replacement. 

Many homeowners wonder if a garbage disposal is necessary with a dishwasher. After all, many dishwashers are powerful enough to handle bits of food with no issues.  

Still, your dishwasher should not act as a replacement for a disposal. Subjecting your dishwasher to continuous leftovers could lead to major clogs. If you don’t want a garbage disposal in your kitchen, simply scrape away any extra food into your trash can or compost pile.

Garbage disposals can be considered bad for the environment due to their electricity usage, but good for the environment because they reduce the food waste sent to landfills. If everyone used a garbage disposal, it would tax the wastewater treatment facilities in that region, but if we had to choose one of the options, we’d say they are a net positive on the environment when used correctly.
