"Fantastic job! My deck is 25 years old and had many layers of stain. Exterior Wood Restoration removed every bit of the old stain and restored the deck to like new condition. The crew was prompt, and worked diligently for 2 full days to complete the job in relentless heat! We are thrilled with the job they did."

"I got a call the night before asking for details around the gutter replacement so that the crew would have the correct equipment and materials with them. They had already told me that I didn't need to be home. I got a call the next morning that they were on the way. Bottom line, they did a very nice job and cleaned up pretty well (there were a few pieces of roofing material from the gutter that was on the deck). The new downspout looks great and you can't tell that it was replaced. I would definitely call them again.

"Marcos from Lara painting was recommended from a few former neighbors and I have used his company multiple times. He is very responsive, punctual, works efficiently, and cares very much about the quality of his work and ensuring his customers are happy. For my most recent jobs, he painted the ceiling under my deck and stained the wood under the stairs of my composite deck. The stain color he selected was a perfect match and I couldn't be happier. He also painted a chalkboard accent wall in my daughter's room. I would highly recommend Lara painting and will use them for my future painting needs."

Re-side Inc. is a locally owned company that has been installing James Hardie Siding for 18 years. We are proud to be a James Hardie "Elite Preferred" Remodeler. This is James Hardie's highest level of Certification and Re-side has always maintained Indiana’s highest rating (96%) from James Hardie's independent follow up surveys. Do not make the mistake of hiring an inexperienced James Hardie siding installer based on price alone... approximately 60% of all Fiber Cement installs are completed incorrectly and have no warranty. \n Re-side’s crews receive ongoing training, and our jobs are randomly audited by James Hardie's installation trainer to make sure critical installation procedures are followed. Project cost is determined by the job. We offer attractive and competitive financing options. Re-side does not install vinyl siding or replace trim on vinyl houses. May contact by phone or email.\n

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

While the terms deck and porch are often used interchangeably, they are two distinct structures. A porch is a covered structure, usually attached to the front of a home, that offers protection from the elements. In contrast, a deck is an open, uncovered platform, often attached to the back or side of a home. Because porches have a roof, they typically require less maintenance than decks, but both features need regular cleaning and repairs to stay in good condition.

Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.

Generally, a patio is more accessible than a standard deck because patios are constructed at ground level. However, decks can be made accessible by adding a wheelchair-accessible ramp, a vertical lift, or a stair lift along the entry. An ADA-compliant deck ramp costs about $3,000 on average. The additional investment will provide a much friendlier experience for your guests with movement impairments.

Typically, most residential wooden decks are designed to support approximately 40 pounds per square foot, including the deck’s weight and any items placed on it. While this is fine for typical use, it is usually not enough to hold the weight of a hot tub filled with water and people. To safely support a hot tub, your wood deck will likely require reinforcement. Therefore, it’s best to have a contractor or a structural engineer assess it before hot tub installation.
