"John is a first rate builder. The new shed is a sturdy, well built structure that with good maintenance should last 50 years or more. It is a beautiful addition to our back yard and has increased our property's overall appeal. John considers all the nuances--such as hooks for the doors when they are open, hinges which go the length of the door. We had our shed painted before it was constructed and the end pieces are sealed to minimize damage due to warping. You won't go wrong with John. I cannot recommend him highly enough if quality is your driver."

"We had damage to our house from the Spring storms and some wood rot on the bottom of the trim on both of our garage doors. We hired Apex Design Build after they had a special on Angie's List. They replaced the shutter on our home, replaced some trim that came off in the storm that was above our two story entry way, painted all the shutters on our house and replaced the trim/weather stripping on our two garage doors with PVC that won't rot. They were very easy to work with and did a wonderful job on our house. We won't hesitate to call them again; in fact, we are going to have them do some more work on our house."

"I wish I could give 10 stars. Our porch was rotting away and had to be completely torn down and rebuilt. This company has experience with pictures to prove. Finished project exceeded expectations. The project was completed in quoted time. No hidden or surprise costs. Brent will not steer you wrong in creating/fixing a project. He is honest and pays close attention to detail. Its as if he was fixing his own porch. I cant wait to work with him again! So very very pleased!"

"David at Whale Creek Co. made my kitchen project less stressful, and more affordable! I came to him with the idea of using old barn wood for my kitchen flooring without knowing any details other than having the wood supply. He was enthusiastic about taking on a project outside-the-box. David jumped right in with knowledge on wood speices, know-how, and necessary tools needed for the project. He did a great job selecting choice pieces of wood, cut and prepared them for laying. His work helped make my rehabbed kitchen beautiful and unique!"

"We purchased our home a year ago and acquired it with an unfinished basement. My husband and I were very eager to have it finished so we could enjoy his ?Man Cave?. We hired Aventus Group to complete our project. I ABSOLUTLY LOVE the finished product. Aventus did an amazing job!!!! Their quality of work is impeccable (and I admit I?m very picky), they were very professional, and they used an app for their customers to access to track progress. They were very attentive to my vision and requests, plus they quickly responded each time I needed to call to ask questions. We highly recommend this company to complete all your remodeling needs. Don?t sleep on Aventus!!! Allow them to make your remodeling dreams come to life. We promise, you won?t regret!?"

Storm Shelters questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can finance new construction, though the process often requires a different type of loan than one for an existing property. There are several financing options available:

  • Construction-to-Permanent Loan: This is a common option where a single loan covers the building costs and then converts into a traditional mortgage once construction is complete and you move in.

  • Construction Loan (Stand-Alone): This type of loan provides funding only for the duration of the construction project. Once the house is built, you will need to pay the loan in full, typically by securing a separate, standard mortgage.

  • Builder Financing: Some custom homebuilders offer their own financing options, which may only require a down payment to begin the building process.

  • Bridge Loan: This can be a useful short-term loan to fund your new construction while you are in the process of selling your old home.

  • Home Equity Options: If you are building a second home, you might be able to use a home equity line of credit (HELOC) or a cash-out refinance on your current property.

It's also important to be aware that some lenders may have restrictions on financing for DIY house builds, so be sure to verify that you can secure financing before starting your project.

The requirement for building permits varies by location, but most building departments will require permits for any changes to the structural components of a home. They’ll also require them for changes to the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC components, as well as any permanent improvements to the land, including concrete patios or foundations for additions or outbuildings. You also might need permits for things like roof replacement and window replacement, depending on your local government.

Sustainable materials and energy-efficient designs support greener construction options.

Renting a storage unit is less expensive than renting a moving pod. On average, renting and shipping a moving pod costs $3,000, while a storage unit costs between $75 and $200 per month. Storage units also tend to provide more space, increasing their cost-effectiveness. The only instance in which storage units are more expensive than moving pods is if you need to rent the unit for an extended period of time.

Any type of construction that damages a tree’s roots via soil compaction can be dangerous, and is one of the primary causes of mature tree death in residential areas. Simply putting lots of weight on the ground around the tree, like construction supplies, trailers, and equipment, can kill roots near the surface. Of course, installing new foundations, patios, or utility lines can cut through nearby tree roots. Accidentally striking a tree with equipment or supplies is rarely a problem, but can cause damage of its own, too.
