Small jobs welcome

"Scott Chaffee and his team did great work on my brick fence. He was prompt and communicative throughout the process. While I did not solicit a ton of bids for this particular job, Scott's quote was dramatically lower than the other bid I got (less than half). The work was just completed this week and it looks great. I will happily hire Scott again the next time I need masonry work done."

"Can't say enough good things about our experience with AAA-1 Masonry & Tuckpointing. We had two holding walls with brick that was deteriorating. They power washed to identify which bricks needed to be removed and swapped out those bricks with new ones. In addition they replaced the capstones on the two walls with larger capstones to provide the walls more protection from the elements. Everything was sealed and completed flawlessly. The crew was experienced and professional. Since the work was done this summer, our walls don't even get wet from rain! We are so grateful for the expert repair but also the guidance that replacing the capstones would provide more of a long term solution. Highly recommend these guys for your masonry needs."

"My experience with 83 Masonry was EXCELLENT! We hired them to tuck-point and partially rebuild our two chimneys. They started the project on time and showed up everyday ahead of time. We have new roof and AC, so before they started any work, they have protected the roof and build protection canopy over the AC to make sure nothing would get damaged. Very professional, knowledgeable, punctual and safe. Not only were the chimneys fixed, they improved the look of the house. We are EXTREMELY happy with the craftsmanship and we would recommend them for any type of masonry work."

"I couldn’t be happier with the work done by this masonry contractor! From start to finish, the team was professional, punctual, and extremely skilled. They helped us with brickwork, and the results were absolutely beautiful better than we imagined. They paid close attention to detail, cleaned up thoroughly each day, and communicated clearly throughout the project. It’s rare to find a crew that’s both friendly and reliable, but this team delivered on every front. Highly recommend to anyone looking for high quality masonry work! Thank you!"

"Starting with the estimate (which was comparable to the other estimates I got), Gibran spent more time discussing exactly what I wanted and needed: the old walk was narrow, did I want it widened; squared off or rounded out where it met the garage slab; raising the back walk slightly to eliminate the extra, shallow step at each end; and most usefully, how to work around the 100 year old catalpa, that had lifted and broken the old walk, between it and the house. We ended up adding a curve to the walk, just by the tree, giving it extra space without disturbing the existing tulip bed on the other side of the walk along the house. He and his crew worked quickly and neatly, and did a very nice job. The new walks meet the city sidewalk and garage slab evenly, the curves are smooth, the tree has room, the tulip bed and ivy along the house weren’t disturbed, and now it’s much less of a pain to shovel snow than it used to be! As a bonus, landscaping was not part of the contract, but Gibran found a source of black dirt for us, and when there was a delay (while waiting for the city inspector) after the forms were in place, he and his crew spread the dirt needed to regrade the yard for us, rather than just sit around. I’m very pleased with the work they did for us, enjoyed working with Gibran and his crew, and would definitely recommend 5 Star Concrete & Construction."

"After meeting with salesperson Tony, it was determined that we had a couple of foundation cracks that needed sealing, and we could probably benefit from the installation of a drain tile system. However, I was reluctant to have torn up the finished portion of the basement. Tony suggested instead that we install a partial drain tile system in the unfinished part of the basement, as that was where our seepage problem was. Really appreciated the fact that I was not pressured into spending more time and money than was actually necessary -- a rarity these days. The entire staff -- from Amanda and Erica at the home office to the onsite crew and the owner himself, Austin, who came out the next day and waited an hour with me for a village inspector who never showed up -- was wonderful. The installers were punctual and uber tidy; when they were finished, you couldn't even tell that work had been performed. The next major storm will be the true test, of course, but I'm pretty confident are basement will be as dry as a bone."

"I would highly recommend working with Perma-Seal for any basement sealing needs. Their sales representative, Jorge Paredes, was outstanding. Very knowledgeable and able to answer all my questions. The Perma-Seal crew was on time and very professional. They did quick and clean work and we haven't had any water issues since the work has been done."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

You can use a regular drill to make pilot holes for gutter brackets in the wooden fascia board around the top of your house, but it’s not the best tool for brick. Instead, you’ll need a heavy-duty power tool like a hammer drill with a carbide tip bit.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

Handbuilt masonry fireplaces are likely what comes to mind when we think about curling up by the fire at the end of the day. But bricks in the firebox and chimney tend to be heavy, which is not ideal for homes with weak or damaged foundations.

Prefabricated fireboxes come with a full flue and chimney system, significantly reducing the price and installation time. However, if you need to replace the panels down the line, you are locked into the same model or something very similar.

Masonry is an umbrella term that involves adhering individual building materials together using an adhesive, so many different things are considered masonry. These include constructing stone or brick walls or facades, installing stucco siding, installing backsplashes or tile floors, and even installing glass block windows, in some cases. Masonry materials include natural stone, clay bricks, concrete bricks, glass blocks, and tiles.

When it comes to how to paint a brick chimney, consider that standard paint can seal in moisture and cause serious chimney problems. Instead, use a vapor-permeable sealant. You’ll first scrub and sand the chimney; then, you can patch any gaps with caulk and apply the sealant. We recommend hiring a pro for this job since it entails working on the roof, which comes with a lot of necessary safety precautions.
