"One 9/24/17 I had them install outdoor lighting in a 30' x 30' fenced-in dog exercise area. They ran conduit for the wiring and installed the flood-light fixtures I wanted, along with installing 2 more coach lights on the house and outdoor switches to control everything. Scott Nelson was terrific to work with. He was prompt in getting back to my initial query, came out very soon to discuss the project and give me a detailed proposal. We scheduled the project for 2 months later to take advantage of my slow period. Scott is an excellent communicator and answered all my emails and follow-ups promptly. Two of his guys, Ben & Eric, came out to do the work. Scott met with them at my house that morning to be sure they understood the job and to discuss some minor changes I wanted. They showed up when they said they would and everything about the work day proved them to be very professional, skilled, friendly, and easy to work with. They also did a great job cleaning up after the project. -- other than the new lights, you'd never have known they'd set foot on the place. The job they did for me was exceptionally well done. I could not be happier with the completed job and with the entire process of working with them, start to finish. I would highly recommend them to neighbors, friends and family. Added note 7/3/18: Doing business with Scott Nelson Electric has turned out to the the nicest experience I’ve ever had with ANY service company. When they installed permanent outdoor lighting in my gravel yard last September I could not have been happier with how it turned out. I use it every night of the year, several times each night and it makes the area I work in with the dogs safe and well-lit. When I discovered one of the lengths of conduit had a small split in the seam due to a manufacturing defect, I contacted them. The split was letting rain water into the conduit. I so appreciate that they were willing to come out and fix the problem right away, no charge. I am very grateful that they stood behind their work and were so responsive. These days we hear too many complaints about things and when something goes right, no one says a word. Well, things went right today and I am very happy that I chose to go with such a reputable and professional company. Thank you so much! I will do whatever I can to spread the good word."

"I was very pleased with the installation. The two technicians acted professionally and appeared to be technically knowledgeable. They were communicative and polite. They wore shoe coverings and covered the light colored stairs and family room carpeting with drop cloths to avoid getting them dirty. Because of COVID-19 requirements, they wore masks and gloves."

"The whole experience was excellent. The woman with whom I spoke on the phone was kind and helpful, and they were able to get someone out right away. Barry, who came to the house, was prompt and professional. Even though I had tried and been unable to reset the circuit breaker before he arrived, Barry was able to just reset the breaker by flipping the switch. He didn't charge me for the visit, which was incredibly kind!! I'm hoping to replace some lights in the next coupld of months, and will definitely be calling them for installation."

"Leon was amazing! We had another company out a few days prior to look at our backed up drain pipe. When they arrived, they told us that the c/o pipe had to be installed outside of the house in order for them to rout and flush. They said our crawl space where the inside c/o pipe was, was not accessible, basically leaving us with no other option than a $4,700 estimate to install the c/o pipe. We wanted a second opinion. That’s when we called Top Tech. Leon arrived the next day and immediately recommended to rout out from the inside (even though the first company said this was not possible) first while using a camera to ensure there was no break in the sewer line. Even though a c/o pipe on the outside would be something beneficial in the future, we had just bought the house and were in no position to spend a lot of money. Leon and his crew came two days later and were fantastic! Not only did they clean out all the tree roots that were causing the problem, Leon was great enough to allow me to see the camera as it was going down- to ensure to myself that there was indeed no break. I felt like the previous company was trying to get a bigger job out of me, whereas Leon and Top Tech really has my best interests in mind- not just spending my money. And guess what!? It worked! He also gave me some great recommendations on things that can help with the root growth in the future. And hey, when we’re ready to get that outside c/o pipe installed- I know who I’m calling!"

"The crew was very professional and got the work done quickly. I had some existing light switches that needed to be incorporated with the installation of the fans. They were able to recommend a combo controller switch that has worked out great. Very reasonable pricing, other quotes I received were more than double."

Chandelier Installation questions, answered by experts

The average cost to install outdoor or landscape lighting is around $4,000, with most projects ranging from $2,000 to $6,000. The total cost can vary widely depending on several factors, including the number of fixtures, design complexity, and the type and quality of the lights used, such as wall sconces, pathway lights, or lamp posts. Other factors that influence the price are the square footage of the area being lit, the amount of electrical work needed, any required excavation or trenching, and local permitting costs. For specific types, you might pay around $100 for pathway or string lighting and up to $700 for lamp post lighting.

There are four main types of lighting used in homes: ambient, task, accent, and decorative. Within these categories, there are a number of fixtures to choose from including ceiling-mounted lights, floor lamps, under-cabinet lights, track lighting, and more.

Choosing the fixture that’s right for you depends on your home design and the area you’re looking to illuminate.

Some outdoor lighting fixtures are easy to install, like solar pathway lights that don’t need connecting to your electrical system. However, other types of outdoor lighting can be challenging to install, especially if it’s part of a larger electrical system. It’s best to work with a trained electrician for high-voltage outdoor lighting. You might also want to work with a landscaper for installing lighting in high or hard-to-reach areas.

A wall-mounting light fitting is called a sconce. Traditionally, sconces were placed along walls in a home to hold candles or torches for lighting. The electrical counterparts with lightbulbs serve an identical purpose, often lighting up hallways. Sconces come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Changing a light fixture mounted on a wall requires the same basic steps as replacing a ceiling light.

Motion-sensor lights use one watt while on standby and five watts while turned on. They’re usually on for one hour over a 24-hour period, bringing the total wattage to about 28 watts per day. LED lights use around 6.5 to 8 watts while on. If you leave an LED light on all night, with night ranging from 10 to 14 hours, you’re looking at using 65 to 112 watts a night. You can minimally cut your wattage in half by switching to a motion-sensor light.
