"We’re still in the planning stage with Icon and haven’t even broken ground yet, but we already have to leave a review because they’ve been that impressive. From day one, these guys have been on top of everything. They answer our questions fast, keep us in the loop, and actually listen to what we want. No runaround, no feeling like just another job on their list. The whole design process has been way easier than we expected. They walk you through everything step by step and give you tons of options to make the house truly yours. We came in not really knowing what to expect and they made it simple. Honestly, if the build goes half as smooth as everything has gone so far, we’re going to be thrilled. We can’t recommend Icon enough — these are good, hardworking people who take pride in what they do. Can’t wait to see our dream home come together!"

"Jim from Independent Remodeling is a great contractor who works with a great team and I highly recommend him to anyone. He helped us out when another contractor abandoned our complete Rehab job and gave us a great price and was SO patient with the whole project. We ran into problems and delays with both the bank and the city and Jim was great about it all. His team did an excellent job on our home and we are very happy with the time it took and the end result. He is reasonably priced and works with your budget as much as he can and he stands behind his work!We will definitely be calling him for future projects!"

"We worked with Linda at DESIGNfirst to scope out initial designs for multiple variations of a major multi-floor / multi-room remodel of our home. She was extremely helpful in proposing and developing design ideas and effective at working with her team to turn around our proposal variations in a timely fashion with high quality. We ultimately held off on our remodeling plans for reasons completely unrelated to the outstanding work Linda and DESIGNfirst provided. We hope to revisit our remodeling plans at the right time, and when we do, we know who we'll call!"

"Our project turned out fantastically. We made numerous upgrades to the whole house to bring it from 1978 to current times. The quality of the work done was very good by all of the subcontractors and RD himself did many of the projects. His communication was pretty good throughout the process, but some work took a bit longer and the monetary side of the change orders weren't always clearly communicated or I would have given 5 stars."

"Although at this point the work hasn't started, this project had a lot of obstacles. The owner made multiple visits and we spoke several times to help figure out a way to reach goals without charge. He was very generous with his time and helped to figure the most cost effective way to get started and progress. He listens and goes beyond the call of duty. I have no doubts that he is true to his word and integrity. I am happy to have found such an exceptional and attentive electrical contractor. He's my guy from now on."

Storm Shelters questions, answered by experts

Yes, particularly handy DIYers can build their own storm shelter, especially when using a prefabricated kit and an existing space. However, it is a large project that can take several weeks, requiring significant manual labor and heavy equipment. For these reasons, hiring a professional is often recommended. You should always leave certain jobs to a pro, such as installing an underground shelter, projects requiring site excavation, or any custom-designed structures. These types of builds are complex, labor-intensive, and can cost more in the long run if not executed properly.

The decision to build or buy an outdoor pizza oven depends on your personal preferences, budget, and time. Whether building is cheaper hinges on the style you choose and the tools and materials you already possess. For example, having a surplus of fire bricks from a previous project can significantly reduce costs. However, if you need to purchase all the required materials, buying a pre-made oven is often the more affordable and less labor-intensive option, with prices for quality versions typically ranging from $300 to $1,000. Keep in mind that while a DIY project can be cheaper than hiring a professional for a custom build, it carries the risk of injury or costly construction errors.

When comparing the costs of portable containers vs. storage units, the monthly rates are often higher for portable containers. However, you don’t have the hassle or potential extra cost of hiring a truck or movers to transport your items to a storage unit location. If you have to add these costs, a portable container can work out better value for shorter-term rentals.

The difference between a pole barn and a stick-built barn is in the construction. Large poles in the ground provide support for pole barns. For stick-built barns, 2-by-4 or 2-by-6 lumber (known as sticks) create a frame around load-bearing beams. Stick-built construction is far more popular for residential homes. Pole barns are more cost-effective because they require fewer materials and less labor.

Any type of construction that damages a tree’s roots via soil compaction can be dangerous, and is one of the primary causes of mature tree death in residential areas. Simply putting lots of weight on the ground around the tree, like construction supplies, trailers, and equipment, can kill roots near the surface. Of course, installing new foundations, patios, or utility lines can cut through nearby tree roots. Accidentally striking a tree with equipment or supplies is rarely a problem, but can cause damage of its own, too.
