"Another HVAC company diagnosed that my AC unit had a leaking evaporator coil after doing a pressure test, they quoted me over $1900 for labor and installation, claiming that my evaporator coil part was difficult to get a hold of.  I called up several other highly rated HVAC companies on Angie's List, all of whom told me that the part would not be difficult to get.  However, some were booked past Memorial Day, and others stated that they couldn't give me a quote unless they came out to actually look at my unit.  All Temp was the easiest to deal with and the most reasonably priced!  I called on May 22nd, they said they could come by on the morning of the 24th, I gave them the measurements and requested specs of my unit over the phone, and they quoted me $1075 right on the phone.  Troy came by on Saturday morning and installed the evaporator coil efficiently, and the price quoted was the price paid.  Couldn't have been an easier transaction.  He also could've been like the original company, who recommended replacing my units to try to get more money from me, but he was extremely honest and told me that with the new evaporator coil in there, I should be able to get many more years out of my unit and shouldn't even think about replacing it.  Thanks for your honesty and great service at a great price!

"Coldest Polar Vortex in history -44F, our 10+ year old furnace said no more. Travis, from Lifeline was here in 3 hours. We upgraded to a dual stage, 96%ECM, 100,000 BTU, HVAC. Travis also was able to get us a $450 ComEd rebate. Before leaving, he loaned us new, highly efficient space heaters, while they picked up our new system. Bob and John completed installation within 3 hours, no breaks. Its worth noting they also installed our A/C in 2017 with the same elitist standards as our new HVAC. I would highly recommend to family and friends. Lifeline has become like family, -perfectionist till the end. My hat is off to you, Lifeline."

"Rick came to my home and gave us a proposal to remove and replace our old furnace and electric water heater. His cost was more than fair. Craig came early on the scheduled day. In no time he had the old equipment removed. The new equipment installations were all completed the same day. My experiance with C.R. Mechanical Services was better than expected. Rick and Craig were both friendly and professional through-out the whole project. I will highly recommend them for anyone in need of a HVAC contractor."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

If your HVAC system's capacity doesn't match the required CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute), imbalances can occur. An undersized system struggles to maintain desired temperatures, leading to discomfort. An oversized system might short-cycle, wasting energy and causing temperature fluctuations. Properly matching capacity to CFM ensures efficient and consistent heating, cooling, and home ventilation system performance.

An HVAC system typically lasts between 10 and 30 years, with an average lifespan of 15 to 25 years. The longevity of the system is influenced by factors such as the quality of the unit, usage frequency, local climate, and how well it is maintained. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, filter replacements, and professional inspections, can help maximize its lifespan. Different components within the system have varying life expectancies. For example:

  • Furnaces: 15 to 30 years

  • Boilers: 20 to 35 years

  • Air Conditioners (AC units): 12 to 20 years

  • Heat Pumps: 10 to 20 years

  • Ductless Mini-Splits: 10 to 30 years

Whether an HVAC damper should be open or closed depends on the season, the zone it controls, and the temperature in that zone. In the summer, open upstairs dampers and close lower-level dampers to get the most efficient cooling possible. In the winter, do the opposite. Cool air will naturally flow down to lower levels, while warm air will rise. This keeps your system from working harder and helps prevent common AC problems.

You should plan to change your AC unit's filter every one to three months, depending on the manufacturer's recommendations. You should also clean the coils at least once per year, but if you have pets or someone in your household has allergies, you might need to clean them more often. Fortunately, many pros will clean the coils and change the filter for you during an inspection, which you should schedule once or twice per year.

This depends on the extent of the freezing. Some ACs only need an hour or two to thaw out, but others may need a full day to completely unfreeze. Once you turn off the system to let it unfreeze, check it periodically to make sure the drain pan doesn’t overflow. When you turn the system back on, keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t start freezing again.
