"We had a floor leveling issue in which a room was part tile over cement and part carpet over hardwood, with the tiled part being higher than the carpeted part. We wanted to remove the tile, level the entire floor, and have hard wood flooring throughout the room. This was a challenge for the other contractors and flooring people who came out to give estimates. However, Mike of Mike’s flooring came out and immediately knew how to implement a plan of action. Mike’s team responded quickly and finished the job in a timely manner. They were pleasant and respectful, took care to limit the dust, and cleaned up after themselves. Mike also gave us great remodeling advice and provided us with great referrals for other trade experts. Most importantly, Mike charged a fair price, and he and his team did a WONDERFUL job. The new hard wood flooring looks GORGEOUS! Mike is a true expert in flooring, and I highly recommend him and his team."

"The job was done to its perfection. My cherry wood flooring is more difficult than normal to refinish but Mike and his buddy made it look brand new and the whole project was communicated clearly and Mike also provide followup calls to make sure things are good after the project is done. Definitely recommend for any kind of flooring projects!"

"Floor Tailor is a small company with incredible expertise, service and commitment to complete customer satisfaction. We had them do a relatively small job (basement stairs) and they treated us like we were their biggest customer. Now, we are getting ready to carpet the rest of the house and put down hardwood floors in other areas. We will not talk to anyone else but CHUCK at Floor Tailor!"

"I contact Mr. Carpet to get a quote for hardwood floors to replace the existing carpet on the first floor and new carpeting for the second floor. The phone call was very pleasant and they were able to make an appointment for me on Saturday afternoon. When Mike came out he had plenty of floor and carpet samples to show me. He took his time and explained the differences between each level of product. After describing what I wanted he was able to help develop a plan of action. Our budget only allowed us to go with the carpeting, but Mike was very helpful in developing solutions and options. After Mike left I had a good idea of how long it would take to get the carpet delivered and installed. Mary was in constant contact with me to let me know what the status of my carpet was and I was pleasantly surprised when she called me and told me it came in early and was able to install it the next day. When the installers arrived they were very nice and courteous. They explained exactly what they were going to do, and how long it should take. They went to work immediately and worked non-stop until the job was done. They pulled out the existing (old) carpet from the first and second floor, then installed new carpeting on the second floor, including the closets, and stairway. They cleaned up as they went, and packaged the old carpeting within the guidelines of my waste removal company. Once they were finished they walked through the house showing me what they did and giving me plenty of time to inspect the work they did. I had a question about the seems and without them showing me them I don't think I would have been able to find them. I was very pleased with the outcome of the job."

Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

In most cases, laminate flooring is better for people with dust or other allergies as laminate is easier to clean. Carpet can trap pollen and other allergens, allowing them to be kicked up into the air again with foot traffic. Consult your flooring specialist about the best types of carpet or laminate flooring to use based on your household member’s needs.

It depends on what’s important to you. For instance, if you’re looking for the lowest-priced carpet material, consider polyester. Alternatively, you could go with olefin (also known as polypropylene), another synthetic carpet material that costs about the same as polyester. Otherwise, if durability is the priority, nylon or wool would be a better choice.

Not sure what you need? A local carpet installer can explain the difference between various carpet types and help you decide what’s best for your home.

There are a few different types of finishes to choose from for the final step of the project.

Water-based polyurethane sealants emit fewer odors and fumes but dry quickly, which can pose a challenge when trying to get a smooth coat. Oil-based polyurethane sealants let out more odors and fumes into the air (it’s especially important to wear a respirator if you choose this type), but they take longer to dry, which can be more forgiving during the finishing step.

Some may prefer wood oil to polyurethane because rather than creating a layer, it becomes part of the wood. Wood oil takes longer to dry, and is less resistant to wear and tear; however, it creates a natural-looking result by enhancing the grain of the wood.

When it comes to linoleum versus laminate, the better choice depends on your personal needs. Linoleum tends to last longer but is more difficult to install. Laminate is less eco-friendly and less durable, but it is easy to install without a professional.

Both options come in a wide variety of styles, but many prefer the look of laminate. Laminate and linoleum are affordable flooring options compared to hardwood or tile, but laminate costs less at about $0.70 to $2 per square foot.

The most affordable kitchen flooring option is sheet vinyl due to its low material and installation costs, followed by laminate flooring and vinyl planks. Be sure to get quotes from flooring companies in your area for exact estimates for your kitchen floor. If you let them know that you’re looking for kitchen floor ideas on a budget, they can suggest products and materials within your price range.
