"Electric Castle installed a wall box charger in our garage for our new EV as well as some miscellaneous electric work we needed done around the house. The electrician Mike was very knowledgeable about what needed to be done regarding the charger installation and the whole process was quick and smooth. Everything was done in an afternoon and is working great. They were timely and very accommodating to work within our busy schedule to do the installation. Highly recommend."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

You can plug your electric car into a regular 120-volt household outlet only if you’re using a Level 1 charger. This method is slower and may take several days to fully charge your EV. For faster charging, you’ll need a Level 2 charger, which requires a 220- or 240-volt outlet.

Most 200-amp panels are allowed 40 breaker slots, though they can accept more circuits with the installation of tandem breakers. To determine the right number of breakers for an electrical panel, panel manufacturers will give their products a rating. That rating is used to limit the number of electrical circuit breakers on the panel. You can check your panel for a rating or ask your electrician to weigh in.

If the outlet is a GFCI model, this is normal since these outlets have their own breakers that shut off when they encounter a problem—just hitting the reset button should solve the issue. Otherwise, the outlet could have bad wiring, or your circuit breaker could be having issues. If the issue started out of nowhere and is not on a GFCI outelt, it’s best to contact an electrician to diagnose the issue.

You should never unplug or touch a buzzing outlet. If there are appliances plugged in that are causing the buzzing, wait until the appliance is turned off (or turn it off yourself) and then unplug it from the outlet. Test the outlet by plugging in something that won’t use much power—a small lamp works well. If the outlet still buzzes, have a pro investigate why.

If you have a tank-type electric water heater, it runs regularly to keep the water at the desired temperature. If you live in a home where you don’t use much hot water, it could seem wasteful to run power to heat water that you’re using infrequently. You could save some power by using a smaller tank, insulating the tank, or lowering the temperature of the water heater.
