Customers say: True professional

"In January 2023, Steve Durkiewicz stepped into a project that had previously become a financial nightmare and turned it into the dream project that we had first imagined. We had previously hired and paid ($1,765.00) a different person/business that claimed to be a licensed and experienced electrician, to install new lighting in our kitchen and home office, as well as install recessed lighting in our family room. But the job was a disaster, unprofessional and substandard - e.g. all electrical wiring was incorrect, ceiling drywall wire routing in relation to studs/framing was incorrect (i.e. ceiling drywall could not be repaired due to lack of space), etc. Steve came in and repaired all of that. With patience and professionalism, he explained every step as he made corrections, and still completed the task in a timely manner! Thank you, EMF Electric! You'll definitely hear from me again!"

Small jobs welcome

"We had some dead electrical outlets that the circuit breaker flipping did not fix. Found the problem (60 year old breaker w/ corroded contacts) and fixed it. Had them also replace two electrical outlet (near our washing machine, one in the bathroom) with GCFI outlets to bring them (closer) to code. Also pointed out that our electrical panel is at the age to be replaced, but did not push into anything ."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

An AC disconnect, also known as a switch box or fuse box, is a safety switch that allows the AC’s electrical supply to be turned off from the outside, usually done by a mechanical contractor coming to work on your unit. The box is protected from the weather by a cover or may be designed as a pull-out unit. Your local code determines where the AC disconnect must be mounted, but it's usually close to your outdoor AC unit.

Although homeowners can turn off a breaker, it’s vital to follow safety precautions when doing so to prevent serious and potentially fatal injuries. For instance, you want to ensure there is no water on the floor when you touch the breaker and wear protective gear such as safety glasses. Anytime you deal with anything electrical, it’s always best to be as safe as possible.

You may be able to spot common electrical dangers yourself, but it’s best to hire an electrician to diagnose and fix the issue. For example, you may be able to DIY small electrical fixes, like replacing an electrical outlet, but major electric repairs or replacements should be left to a professional electrician.

If you’re moving wires, installing new wires, or installing new fixtures in the space you’re insulating, then you will need to hire a licensed electrician to do that portion of the job for you. However, if you just intend on replacing old insulation or adding new insulation over existing insulation, then you don’t need to hire one. Your insulation installer will work around wiring, fixtures, outlets, and switches, even if they’re installing fiberglass batts in the voids where wires run. However, you will need an electrician if you suspect a problem with your wiring during the insulation work.

They can vary—a lot. For example, while the EU continues to move toward broader standardization, many different types of outlets still exist from country to country. Some local standards cared about polarization, and some didn’t. It’s similar to other countries around the world.

Generally, you’re less likely to find polarized outlets outside North America. However, alternative plugs and outlets often incorporate precautions so that accidentally touching live prongs on a plug is hard or impossible. You may also find interesting regulations overseas that limit the use of outlets in bathrooms or near sinks to decrease the chance of shock.
