"Blazer Electric was excellent. They installed a new outlet in my kitchen with causing minimal mess since this was a brand new outlet so I could install an oven range hood. They used all the PPE precautions and were pretty thorough and polite. I will definitely have them do my future electrical work when needed."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

In Naperville, DIY electrical work may seem cost-effective, but local regulations require permits and inspections, and only licensed contractors can legally perform most projects. Mistakes can lead to failed inspections or safety hazards. Hiring a professional ensures code compliance, warranty coverage, and peace of mind. For complex projects like service upgrades or EV charger installations, consult a Naperville-licensed electrician for best results.

Helpful?

Homeowners in Naperville often overlook local code requirements, such as proper GFCI placement or conduit use in damp areas. Common errors include overloading circuits, skipping permits, or using unapproved materials. According to the Naperville Building Department, these mistakes can cause failed inspections and safety risks. To avoid issues, always verify code requirements, use approved materials, and schedule inspections at each project stage.

Helpful?

For electrical work in Naperville, use NM-B (Romex) wiring—ideal for dry, interior walls—and PVC or metal conduit for garages, basements, or outdoor areas, as required by local code. Install tamper-resistant GFCI outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, and exterior locations. Always select circuit breakers rated for your appliances, and use UL-listed junction boxes. For guidance, refer to the Naperville Building Department's approved materials list.

Helpful?

In Naperville, most electrical projects—including panel upgrades, new circuits, or low-voltage systems above 25 volts—require a permit from the Naperville Building Department. Only licensed and registered contractors may apply, ensuring compliance with the latest National Electrical Code and local amendments. Permit applications are submitted online, and fees generally include required inspections. Always consult the Naperville Building Department for current forms and project-specific requirements.

Helpful?

In Naperville, permit review for electrical work typically takes one to two weeks, depending on project complexity and season. Once approved, a small residential job may take two to four days, with each inspection by the Naperville Building Department adding one to three business days. Larger projects or busy periods may extend timelines, so plan ahead and coordinate with your contractor for accurate scheduling.
