"About the job: KITCHEN: Remove bulkhead, fix drywall, retexture & paint ceiling, install new light, paint, refurbish existing cupboards, build new cupboard above refrigerator, install new faucet, disposal, and dishwasher, new backsplash, new counters, new flooring. BATHROOM: Remove old tile, and install new tile. Mr. Ford is a skilled craftsman who takes pride in his work. From the estimate, to the final payment, he impressed me with his professionalism. He was here when he said he would be, and has the tools necessary to do the job right. Jonathan is very knowledgeable about his trade, making suggestions that elevated my original ideas. He was courteous, friendly, and conscientious about his work. He took the time to clean up the worksite daily. Jonathan does excellent work! He treated me fairly, was flexible, and stayed within my budget. I never felt pressured to upgrade. He was a pleasure to work with, and I have already spoken to him about completing my next project."

Customers say: True professional

"I used Scott's Home Renewal for a first floor renovation about three years ago, was pleased and hired them again for this. Not the cheapest contractor, but definitely the best I have used here. First class professionals; first rate subs, especially the tile and glass people The custom glass door arrived with the wrong specs, and the glass contractor got the factory to make a new one with only one day of waiting.. If you want it done right, contact Scott's."

"Ted, the estimator, used a very sharp pencil and was concerned with doing a good job at a good price. My deck had some rotting railing and needed staining. Ted, carefully looked over the deck and made his measurements. He explained what was needed and why so we understood what was the job they were going to do. They phoned before they were going to start so we had time to prepare. The crew started the work and introduced themselves when we check on their work. Immediately we felt very comfortable with them. They were friendly and explained what they were doing and why. As whith most projects, a little more damage was found. I asked that it be replaced as needed and I offered to pay since it was not included in the estimate. The extra damage was repaired but they stuck with their estimate and rejected my offer to pay an additional amount. The project turned out as nice as we were expecting. We will definitely hire them again."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

If the bowing basement wall is less than 2 inches, steel or carbon fiber straps are the best solution. For bowing that is more than 2 inches, wall anchors are the most effective. A contractor can help you decide the best method of repair for your home's foundation and also address the root cause of the trouble.

For a professional carpenter, installing a window seat can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on some aspects of the project. Aside from building the seat itself, if they have to remove any cabinets, shelves, or baseboards, that will add time to the project.

The average cost of DIY window framing is about $40 to $60 in materials. If you hire a window treatment professional, you’ll pay for materials plus labor costs—anywhere from $250 to $800 per window. The final cost is highly dependent on the window size, as larger windows are heavier and more difficult to install, as well as the type of window framing material.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.
