"I used Scott's Home Renewal for a first floor renovation about three years ago, was pleased and hired them again for this. Not the cheapest contractor, but definitely the best I have used here. First class professionals; first rate subs, especially the tile and glass people The custom glass door arrived with the wrong specs, and the glass contractor got the factory to make a new one with only one day of waiting.. If you want it done right, contact Scott's."

"Ted and the Deck Doctor crew refaced and expanded our deck to over double the original size, and did a fabulous job! We couldnâ t be happier with the results! The were very easy to work with, considerate of our association rules and very reasonably priced, especially considering the great quality of work. Very friendly, gave a clear quote and stuck to it even when material costs were higher. We would highly recommend them, and are happy that several of our neighbors are also considering hiring them for projects! We look forward to making many years of family memories on our new deck!"

Small jobs welcome

"Derek was very professional and personable . Small roof trim repairs that required attention. He completed the project in one hour on the same day as looking at it . I would definitely contact DMF Construction again when needed."

"LNE Property Preservation delivered timely, high quality work at a affordable price. The owner Luis and his assistant were courteous, professional, and very easy to work with. They arrived on time and were careful to work safely. They also thoroughly cleaned up their work area, which I appreciated. From his first call to me, Luis listened to my needs to be sure he would provide the service I wanted. The initial project was to remove a pergola from our large deck. In talking through my future plans for the deck, Luis offered his ideas as well, and so I added solar lights to the deck bench and overhead solar lights with motion sensor. Luis and his assistant also found a way to use the beams from the pergola to replace the damaged lattice skirt on our deck, This allowed us to recycle the good beams and save money, both important to me. He also power washed the house, which was long overdue. In the course of the work, I’d asked Luis if he had time to also replace a couple of damaged deck boards. It was fortunate he could, for we found a colony of carpenter ants under these boards damaging the wood. After I had the ants treated, Luis returned and replaced a dozen boards. LNE delivered excellent professional work and customer service, and I would indeed call on them again. In fact, I’ve already made a list of several other projects for them!"

"The brothers were very professional. They were easy to work with, listened, asked the right questions, made sure all permitting details were taken care of, and then took my design ideas (as well as my old deck-removal was included in the estimate) and made my vision happen under budget. I couldn't be happier with my new deck! Communication during the project was overall very good. They showed up as promised every day, came prepared, dealt with the mud on the hill they were working on, cleaned up, and even apologized for the muddy mess due to 4" of rain that week!! From bid acceptance to completion was about two weeks, but only due to the rain and an inspection delay. I plan to hire them again for a project or two next year, and highly recommend McGreal Brothers LLC."

"He came immediately. Unfortunately, we noticed a structural problem that we need to fix before we can hire him to do the exterior work. I called him and hope to use him in the Spring when this problem is remedied."

FAQs for carpentry projects in Norwalk, IA

The average cost to hire a woodworker for a project in your home is around $65 per hour, but hourly rates can range from $35 to $250 or more, depending on the experience and skill of the woodworker. Your total woodworking project cost will depend on the complexity of the work, the type of wood, the number of projects, and any other materials your project requires. You could hire a professional woodworker to create everything from a custom cabinet to ornate, unique staircases.

Generally, general contractors charge between $50 and $150 hourly, though not every contractor charges by the hour. If charging based on the project, you can expect a markup of 10% to 20% of the construction cost. You can expect to pay between $300 and $500 daily if charged by the day.

While city and state laws vary on general contractor licensing requirements, hiring an unlicensed general contractor could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local general contractor guidelines for your area.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

Every woodworker has different skills and experience, so we recommend asking the following questions when hiring a woodworker for your project:

  • How long have you been in the woodworking industry?

  • What experience do you have with my type of project?

  • Do you have customer references I can speak with?

  • How long do you expect my project to take?

  • What is my recourse if I have an issue with your work?

  • Do you charge hourly or per project?

  • Will you work on-site or in your own workshop?

  • Does your fee include the necessary post-job clean-up?

While they perform similar tasks, a carpenter is responsible for the woodworking that goes into construction—like framing, installing sheathing, and hanging kitchen cabinets—while a woodworker tackles more intricate and custom projects—like building custom furniture and installing wainscoting. Based on these definitions, most woodworkers can tackle the jobs of a carpenter, but you should always ask about your specific project when choosing a woodworker to ensure they have the necessary skills to tackle the job.
