"Bobby and his crew are amazing! Every step of our basement remodel was completed in a professional and timely manner. When we had questions or needed advice, Bobby and his crew never hesitated to help and share their recommendations. They exceeded our expectations and we will be calling them again should we do any more projects at our home!"

"When my wife and I decided to have our basement finished we met with 6 contractors before finally deciding to work with Aimee and Jesse and we couldn’t be happier with the result. The basement that Aimee, Jesse and the team built for our family is nothing short of incredible. From the design process through the final inspections Aimee and her team have been wonderful to work with. For future remodeling needs, we won’t be meeting with 6 contractors again, I’ll only be calling Aimee and Jesse."

"Overall, it was a good experience. AAA put down a vapor barrier and installed a Santa Fe dehumidifier with sump pump. The result is that we can now use the stand-up basement/crawlspace to store things under the house without ruining them. This is the part that you need to know. The installation was not without problems. First, they broke an A/C drain pipe, second, they cut a sprinkler controller wire while running a PVC pipe. Here's my take, accidents happen but how does the business respond to these issues? Well, Donna was very quick to send her team out to correct the problems and they even paid for the damage to the sprinkler system. To me, that's top notch customer service. Any business can make a mistake, but how they handle it is the mark of a good company. Every time I lift the roll door and go into the basement now, I'm amazed at how cool and fresh the air is down there. No more mildew and no more smell."

"I hired JMR to remodel my kitchen and both bathrooms. List of items completed: -Installed lights -Removed popcorn ceiling texture all throughout house -Refinished cabinets -Removed carpet and installed hardwood floors throughout house -Tiled both bathrooms -Changed layout of kitchen -Demolished wall separating kitchen and dining room/living room -Switched all light switches and receptacles -Painted walls, trim, doors and windows of whole house I was uneasy to have a company make such big changes in the house, but JMR made me feel comfortable through the whole process. Everything was explained to me thoroughly and any questions I had were answered. Everything turned out amazing. The work was done smoothly and the finished result was more then I could ask for. Thanks to JMR, my kitchen is all people can talk about when they come over!!"

"Chris and his team from Norman Restorations did an outstanding job updating my home. His advice was good council regarding the quality of materials, color recommendations, and overall fit of the total project. His workers were prompt, performed quality work in a timely manner, and cleaned up the site well. I put in Luxury Vinyl Planking (LVP) throughout the house. It looks great and was a very professional job. The entire house interior painting also came out fantastic. Lastly, the new kitchen looks great and his advice on cabinets and countertops gave it very functional, and much more expensive look, then it actually cost."

"Mark is very easy to work with. He was a help in giving us ideas that we hadn't considered that proved very useful. Mark was also very flexible about changing things that I wanted done differently. His work looks excellent. He pointed out problems with the house structure, fixing them as he put in a new basement bathroom and repaired and put in a new deck floor."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

A walkout basement is considered to be partially below grade because at least one wall is entirely exposed. In some cases and in specific municipalities, inspectors and appraisers will still count walkout basements as below grade, which means the space can’t serve as living space or be rented out. If you intend on using the area as living space or a separate apartment, you should check with your local building department to make sure it’s legal to do so.

Egress windows or doors are required in finished basements to meet safety and building codes. If your basement is unfinished and used as a storage space, egress windows are not required, but anything considered a habitable space must have an additional point of egress in addition to the stairs.

You can paint your ceiling or install a drywall ceiling if the ceiling is unfinished, as they take up less headroom than drop ceilings.

If there are pipes in the way of ceiling installation, you can do one of two things: reroute the pipes or adjust the installation to fit, which will cost extra.

Physically, the most challenging part of finishing a basement is installing egress windows or doors when the space is below ground level. Mentally, the hardest part may be envisioning the project and planning around load-bearing and mechanical obstacles.

Basements with persistent moisture problems or flooding shouldn’t be finished until the moisture issues have been fixed. In addition, if your foundation is cracked, you have unmitigated radon levels, or you have asbestos or lead pipes, remediate the underlying problem before finishing your basement. Turning a basement into living space before fixing these issues can lead to serious health risks or structural damage.
