"Removing old wallpaper revealed mold on the dinning room and adjoining kitchen wall. Contacted Abatement Contractors (ACU) and left a message to contact me. Within 20 minutes got a call from Terri Cowart, owner of ACU, and scheduled an appointment for the very next day. Terri inspected the wall and there was no question the mold had to be removed. A previous test by another entity determined the mold was of a particularly toxic variety, but not active. I also had an air quality test done by a third party and it showed the air inside the home was okay. The inactivity of the mold and it being covered by wallpaper would likely explain why there was no moldy smell that would have put me on notice of a problem. In addition, I had begun to remove old kitchen tiles and dinning room flooring and Terri suggested an asbestos test on the flooring. Because the house was built in 1959, it was likely that asbestos was present. Terri took a tile sample and had it tested and confirmed the presence of asbestos. The test was $50.00 and paid at time of her inspection. Terri prepared a proposal to remediate the mold and remove the asbestos. After responding to my questions and providing clarification on a few points, I signed the proposal and the work was scheduled for the following week. The crew of four arrived on time and promptly set to work covering the work area in plastic and air cleaning equipment and began removing the moldy sheetrock and floor tiles. Tia, the crew chief, saw to it that all the work was done in accordance with the proposal and answered all my questions and concerns. It took a good 8 hours to set up, commence the remediation, and remove and secure the sheetrock and flooring. The inside wall and studs were then painted with a mold resistant coating. However, the kitchen tiles could not be removed without taking out the subflooring and expose the floor joists and crawlspace below the kitchen. I had not prepared for this, but Terri allowed me time to find someone to put in a subfloor after removal of the old flooring. So the following week, Tia and two crew members again set up and began removing the kitchen floor which took about three hours."

"I called Nathaniel after another contractor found suspected asbestos tape in our crawl space. Nathaniel was able to arrange a same-day appointment for me at a price that was the best of all the many companies I called. He arrived on time and was professional, courteous, and competent. I plan to continue with them for the abatement of any issues his testing uncovers and would highly recommend his team!"

When it comes to restoring homes following a flood, fire, or other disasters, few restoration companies are as committed to their customers as Flood Pros USA. Since 2015, we’ve been providing homeowners and businesses with professional water, fire, and smoke restoration services and mold remediation in order to help them return to their properties and daily routines as quickly as possible. We offer free inspections to ensure that they’re getting the services that they need to remedy their damage issues. We’re proud to say that we are dedicated to taking care of our customers and building trust and understanding.

"We had what appeared to be a small problem with some moisture in our floor boards in the kitchen that turned into something much larger when we saw mold. We used Angie's List and found that FloodPros could assist us. We contacted them immediately and they showed up within the hour to identify the problems, develop a plan to contain and fix the problems. Joe is the owner of Flood Pros and helped us tremendously with what was initially a one month issue but ended up taking four start to finish. He was responsive, honest and empathetic. I felt that he was treating us as if he was his most important client, which clearly was not the case. In addition to having an outstanding crew, they also navigated the sometimes difficult process of insurance claim processing. By taking us directly out of the day to day, we were able to focus on other things that took some of the stress out of something that at times seemed overwhelming. At the end of the process, our home was fully restored and in better condition then where we started. Joe and his team are true professionals and extremely honest. While I truly hope we never have to go through this again, I am very grateful for everything they did."

"Thanks to Cathy, Tony, and Joe, and for great service from the appt set up, to the estimate, to the actual cleaning. Joe was in and out very quickly and did a great job. Some of the stains I did not think would come out did, and a week later have not come back. I was ready to replace the carpet but they did such a great job I don't need to. Thanks so much."

Asbestos Removal questions, answered by experts

Currently, there is no federal licensing mandate for asbestos removal contractors. However, certain cities and states require certification and specialized training. For example, in New York, those handling asbestos must receive an Asbestos Handler Certification. The mandates dictating the necessary training or certifications vary based on state and local laws.

You are not really supposed to seal asbestos with paint, but in theory it could work—the caveat being that this is extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. The only real way to seal asbestos is with the professional application of an encapsulating material like epoxy. Due to the negative effect asbestos can have on your home, however, it is usually the best course of action to accept a costly fix and remove the material entirely.

In the 1980s, the use of asbestos in house siding materials underwent a significant decline, ultimately being phased out by the mid-1980s to early 1990s. This change was largely due to a growing awareness of the severe health risks associated with asbestos exposure, particularly its link to lung diseases and cancers. With increased public concern and regulatory agency involvement, building codes and regulations were updated to restrict the use of asbestos in construction materials.

Asbestos has not been used to manufacture new siding since the early 1980s. So, while asbestos is not currently used to make new siding, it can still be present in the siding of homes built before the 1980s. The best way to know if your siding has any type of asbestos is to have a professional test it.

Performing abatement for asbestos means the contractor removes or encapsulates the asbestos to protect your family’s health. The term abatement refers to the steps required to keep asbestos fibers from moving into the air. Understanding what asbestos abatement is can help you discuss the case with your contractors by understanding the jargon they use.
