"Lesson learned. Always get an estimate. BEFORE the work is done. At least a digital copy. Arrangements for the project were made, with some one named Lynn, for the company to send someone to complete the work. We were quoted over the phone 4500-5000 which included a mold test. A sub contractor with an entirely different company (National Mold Company) was sent. When the contractor arrived, he stated that the job would be much more simpler than first thought. This led us to believe that the job would cost less, no. All said and done, they charged $5500. All said and done, it's almost like no work was done. The stains and the smell are still there. Only one actual board was taken upon the attic room. The ceiling in the bedroom was primed and painted but are still visible and have a funky smell. At this point I'm going to. Do what we should have done; Do the job ourselves. Just now with $5500 less dollars in our pockets. A detailed receipt was not given even though it was requested."

Other contractors reviewed the requirements and wouldn't touch it, not only did Georgia Restoration and Construction take on the job they did an awesome job. The extension added 210 sq ft. The job required framing/roofing/new pillars/new siding/painting, etc.. The GARCP team did a great job managing the various needed crews and the unusually high volume of local rain fall. No construction job is without a few flaws, the important thing is that the issue is acknowledged and corrected. The team did a great job solving all issues to our upmost satisfaction. To seal off, or encapsulate, asbestos-containing materials in your home, you’ll need to utilize a sealant specifically designed for asbestos encapsulation. These sealants bind with asbestos fibers to keep them from spreading throughout the air and causing bodily harm. In many cases, these sealants can be simply painted on, but you’ll need to wear a protective body suit as well as an asbestos-rated respirator to interact with these materials safely.

Some pros may recommend covering a popcorn ceiling that tests positive for asbestos with beadboard ceiling planks or drywall. The cost to install a beadboard ceiling averages more than $5,000, but you likely will pay more than the average for the installer to deal with the asbestos safely. Installing a beadboard ceiling or new drywall will disturb the asbestos and release some microscopic fibers, so the installer will need to take precautions. 

Asbestos has many beneficial properties, including fire resistance, strength, and chemical resistance. It is also an excellent insulator, which is why it was used in pipe insulation and other building materials for decades. For all its benefits, asbestos is dangerous for human health, which is why it was eventually banned from use in certain products.

Most manufacturers stopped putting asbestos in linoleum before 1980 due to public concerns about its toxicity. However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) didn’t ban asbestos-containing products until 1989, and a comprehensive ban was not announced until 2024. This means that homes built after 1989 may still have asbestos in their flooring.

Asbestos-containing materials, like duct wrap, should be encapsulated using a sealant specifically formulated for asbestos. These sealants work to bind with asbestos fibers and help further neutralize them as a health risk. Whenever you’re working near asbestos-containing materials, be sure to keep safety as a top priority and wear a P-100-rated respirator as well as protective clothing.
